AKRON, Ohio – The 15th-ranked Maryland women’s basketball team beat Akron, 75-54, Saturday in the Zips’ James A. Rhodes Arena. Sophomore Kaila Charles and senior Kristen Confroy lead the Terrapins (7-2) with 23 points each.

Confroy went 5-for-7 from outside the arc with nine boards in front of her hometown crowd. Charles chipped in 14 boards for her fourth double-double of the year.

Maryland jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first two minutes of the game, led by Confroy with five of the Terps’ points in front of her hometown crowd. Seven Terrapins scored in the first 10 minutes to lead them to a 24-6 advantage.

Akron (3-3) shot 44 percent from the field in the second quarter to take a cut into the Terps’ lead. The Zips’ won the second period 21-14. Maryland led 38-27 at half.

The teams traded baskets to start the third quarter. Fifth-year senior Ieshia Small scored and was fouled to start an 8-2 run to push it to 59-43 with 2:00 left in the third. Maryland led 64-48 at the end of the third quarter.

The Terrapins won the battle on the glass, 53-33, and outscored the Zips 38-22 in the paint.

With her 23 points in Saturday’s game, Charles reached the 500-career point mark in 44 career games.

The Terrapins took Confroy home to play in front of her family and friends. Confroy grew up in Solon, Ohio, about 30 miles from the University of Akron. The Terrapins visited her home and spend time with her family and friends Friday night.

Maryland is ranked No. 15 in the Associated Press poll and in the USA Today Coaches poll.

Fans are encourage to bring stuffed animals Wednesday night to toss onto the court at halftime as part of the Terrapins' annual Teddy Bear Toss. All stuffed animals collected will be donated to College Park Youth and Family Services. Fans will have the chance to win prizes if they register their teddy bears at the marketing table and their teddy bear lands on the target on the floor.

All fans in attendance will receive a basketball bingo card and have the opportunity to win prizes for single bingo and blackout bingo.
