COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior Brianna Fraser and sophomore Stephanie Jones each notched their first career double-doubles as the No. 15 Maryland women’s basketball team opened the 2017-18 season with a 91-58 win over Albany on Friday evening.
Frasier finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Jones had 11 points and 18 boards. Four other Terrapins finished with double-digit points: Blair Watson (16), Kristen Confroy (14), Kaila Charles (13) and Channise Lewis (10).
After a rusty first quarter by both teams, the Terrapins pulled away in the second quarter to take the lead for good.
Maryland and Albany were tied at 14 at the end of the first, with 19 combined turnovers between them. Jones led the way for Maryland with four points and seven boards.
A three by Watson at the start of the second quarter jumpstarted a 32-2 run for Maryland to take a 39-16 lead with two minutes left in the period. Seven Terrapins scored in the run to outscore the Great Danes 30-4 in the second quarter and take a 44-18 lead at the break.
The Terrapins begin the season ranked No. 15 in the Associated Press preseason poll and No. 13 in the USA Today Preseason Coaches poll.
Head coach Brenda Frese signed the No. 4 recruiting class in the country earlier this week, making it 12 top 10 recruiting classes in her 16 years in College Park. The Terrapins will welcome 6-5 forward Shakira Austin (Fredericksburg, Va.), 5-9 guard Taylor Mikesell (Massillon, Ohio) and 6-4 post Olivia Owens (Niskayuna, N.Y.) next summer. Austin is ranked No. 3 overall, per ESPN, Mikesell is No. 32 and Owens is No. 33.
