COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore Anthony Cowan Jr. and freshman Darryl Morsell headlined Maryland’s 88-44 exhibition victory over the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets at the XFINITY Center on Thursday night. Cowan finished with 17 points while Morsell put up 14 points and three rebounds in his first game as a Terp. Maryland totaled 38 points off the bench in win.
“I was proud of my group tonight,” said Head Coach Mark Turgeon. “We’re doing some things differently offensively than we’ve done in the past and it’s taken us some time to get used to it, but I thought as the game went on, we got better.”
A phenomenal dunk from the freshman Morsell midway through the first half gave the Terps an 11-point lead, from which the Yellow Jackets never recovered. The Terps would string together a 17-2 run to end the first half. Maryland maintained a comfortable cushion moving forward, leading 47-23 at the half and holding a 53-point lead in the final minutes.
The Terps’ lead grew incrementally throughout the second half, with contributions spread across the entire team. Maryland distributed the ball well, with four players scoring in double digits and the team totaling 16 assists.
Junior Ivan Bender finished with a team-high nine rebounds while also draining all four of his free throws. Bender and the Terps’ strong defensive performance limited Randolph-Macon to just 28.8 percent shooting from the field. Freshman Guard Buzz Anthony led the Yellow Jackets with 10 points.
The Terps will return to the hardwood on Friday, Nov. 10, to face Stony Brook at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in East Garden City, New York.
