COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The ninth-ranked Maryland men’s soccer team fell 3-0 to VCU at Ludwig Field Tuesday night.

The Terrapins (10-3-3, 5-0-2 Big Ten) fell behind 2-0 to the Rams (9-4-0, 5-1-0 A-10) after 45 minutes before VCU made it 3-0 with an early goal in the second half. Junior Sebastian Elney led the Terps with three shots and hit the post twice in the match.

“I thought we had a great response after last Friday’s game,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “Our effort was very good throughout the game. There is so much that I liked, unfortunately this is a strange game. VCU was incredibly efficient in their chances. We had enough chances here and enough quality in our play to win the game or have it go to overtime. We didn’t make the plays. We started to see some real positives in certain things, but full credit to VCU.”

Elney’s shot off the post, a right-footed effort after a long ball from freshman Matt Di Rosa, was the best chance for either team through 20 minutes. Rafael Santos gave the Rams the lead in the 23rd minute with a dipping strike from 30 yards out that beat Dayne St. Clair and snuck under the Terps’ crossbar.

In the 43rd minute, senior Jake Rozhansky had a chance fall to his head, but Mario Sequiera made a fantastic reaction save to keep the Rams ahead. VCU attack at the other end and Santos scored his second off a Siad Haji cross in the box. Francesco Amorosino made it 3-0 in the 53rd minute.

Maryland created chances for the remainder of the match, but couldn’t get the ball past Sequiera. Junior Eryk Williamson had a close-range effort saved in the 66th minute after a nice ball in from Paul Bin. Elney hit the post again in the 76th minute.

The Terps return to action Sunday afternoon in the regular season finale against Michigan. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the action can be seen live on BTN.
