COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Sophomore Madison Maguire broke a scoreless tie to lift the 10th-ranked Maryland field hockey team past No. 19 Iowa Friday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Junior Linnea Gonzales scored shortly after for a 2-1 victory for the Terrapins (6-3, 2-0 B1G).

The two teams stayed scoreless through the first 60 minutes and 10 seconds, but Maguire broke free and banged in a hard shot from 10 yards out to break open the scoring.

“Great performance in the second half for us and great goals,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “Madison Maguire has been scoring a lot in training and we’ve been looking for her as a forward to put a good shot in and make one. When we didn’t get goals, we sort of lost our flavor, but we are able to pick that up and get on the board twice with Linnea’s corner.”

Just under two minutes later, Gonzales scored off a penalty corner to make it a two-goal lead for Maryland. The Hawkeyes (4-6, 0-2) got on the board with 1:43 to play when Madeleine Murphy tipped in a shot.

The Hawkeyes took five shots in the final 5:30 of the first period, but goalkeeper Sarah Holliday made two saves and the Terps’ defense blocked two to hold them off. The teams were scoreless at halftime.

The Terrapins took 12 shots to the Hawkeyes’ 11 overall and had five penalty corners to three for Iowa. Holliday finished with five saves.

Earlier this week, senior Lein Holsboer was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and Kyler Greenwalt was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for their first career weekly honors.

Maryland was tabbed as the No. 10 team in the country in the Penn Monto/Division I Coaches poll released Sept. 19.

Next, Maryland will host No. 14 Northwestern (6-3, 1-0) Sunday at 1 p.m. in College Park. Admission and parking are free for Sunday’s contest.

All campers from the Terps’ summer camp this summer are invited to Sunday’s game and will be able to show what they learned at halftime. The Terrapins will also sign autographs after the game.
