COLLEGE PARK, Md.
- Junior Gordon Wild scored two goals and the Terrapin defense registered its third consecutive shutout as No. 3 Maryland topped Rutgers, 3-0, for its first Big Ten Conference win of the season at Ludwig Field on Tuesday night.

Playing in its third nationally-televised match in its last four contests, Maryland (5-0-1, 1-0-1) outshot Rutgers a staggering 25-3, but didn’t get on the scoreboard until the second half. Wild’s fourth and fifth goals of the season in the 52nd and 60th minute gave the Terps a solid 2-0 lead before Eli Crognale’s first score as a Terrapin in the 85th minute sealed the match at 3-0.

Both Wild goals were set up by senior midfielder Jake Rozhansky. Rozhansky found Williamson on the wing and the ensuing cross found Wild in the middle of the box from five yards for the first goal of the match. Rozhansky’s cross was redirected by Sebastian Elney for a similar goal eight minutes later.

Crognale’s goal came from 25 yards off after snagging a failed clear by Rutgers goalkeeper Rafael Pereira.

Meanwhile the Terrapin defense held steady, extending its shutout streak to a whopping 307-plus minutes.

“I’m very pleased with tonight’s effort,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “We challenged our players after Friday’s game to be better in transition, be better at fighting for balls and be more lethal on the attack. I thought today was an overall terrific performance.

“We in were in control of the match the entire time and it was good to see the team tighten up our defensive spacing and compactness. It was a good bounce back performance from Friday’s disappointing performance. Our standards are high. We had a couple days of good preparation and it was a good result."

Maryland will hit the road for the beginning a three-game road stand when the Terps travel to State College for a match against Penn State on Sunday at 5 p.m.
