WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. The third-seeded Maryland baseball team fell, 9-1, to second-seeded West Virginia in the opening game of the Winston-Salem Regional at David F. Couch Ballpark Friday afternoon.

The Terrapins (37-22) could not overcome six West Virginia home runs, and plated just a run on their seven hits. Junior Zach Jancarski led the Terps with three hits and an RBI.

Kyle Davis and Jimmy Galusky gave West Virginia the lead in the second with a pair of home runs, with Davis' of the two-run variety. Jancarski's two-out single to score Madison Nickens put Maryland on the board in the top of the third, but Marty Costes grounded out with the bases loaded to end the frame.

After a Mountaineer solo shot in the bottom half of the third, Maryland once again loaded the bases in the fourth with one down, but a Justin Morris foul out and Jancarski flyout ended the frame.

West Virgina hit two more home runs off Maryland starter Brian Shaffer to take a 7-1 lead after five. Single runs in the seventh and eighth made the score 9-1.

Brandon Gum finished with two hits and reached base three times.

Maryland returns to action tomorrow against the loser of Friday night's Wake Forest/UMBC contest. Coverage on ESPN and the Maryland Baseball Network begins at 2 p.m.
