COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Student-athletes from many sports came to Heritage Hall on Tuesday night for Student Athlete Career Networking Night. This event gave the athletes a chance to step away from their sport and meet with prospective employers from many different fields of work.
The University of Maryland Athletic Department's Brand U initiative worked with the school's career center to put the event together. A countless number of employers were eager to attend.
“It really wasn't too difficult or too hard of a sell to get employers to come here tonight because student-athletes have so much natural leadership and transferable skills that if you say ‘athlete' to employers they usually come knocking, said Industry Development Specialist Annie Weinschenk. “This is a great opportunity for the students to practice their networking skills, work hard to sell themselves and develop their own personal brand.”
Numerous different athletic teams were represented at the networking night, including men's and women's soccer, field hockey, volleyball, football, wrestling and women's basketball. The group enjoyed refreshments while mingling with a wide array of prospective employers.
“I met couple different camp organizations and summer job opportunities,” said Emmanuel Korvah (men's soccer). “Just to come out here and network with my teammates and explore some different opportunities that may be possible for myself in the future.”
The list of companies represented included ESF camps, Morgan Stanley, Cvent, NSA, Wedding Wire, Sherwin Williams, Soccer Shots, RCM of Washington, Target, Forester Financial, Gym Guys, Corporate Fitness Works and the Peace Corps.
