RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Maryland (4-17-1) scattered 11 hits and scored five runs in the first three innings to defeat host-UC Riverside 6-3 at the Highlander Classic Saturday. Three different Terps notched multi-hit games, including senior Kristina Dillard who added two RBIs and a run to help pace the Maryland offense.
Maryland took advantage of a hit by pitch and error in the first inning, as Dillard drove in Destiney Henderson and Anna Kufta with a double down the left field line. The Terps would pad their 2-0 lead in the third, batting around the order.
Three consecutive one-out singles loaded the bases, before a Kassidy Cross walk brought in the third run of the day. A Martin sacrifice fly pushed the lead to 4-0, before Amanda Brashear came through with an infield single to put her side ahead 5-0.
Maryland scored its sixth unanswered run in the fifth thanks to another RBI from Martin on a single, before UC Riverside answered in the bottom half of the frame with three runs.
Hannah Dewey took care of business in the seventh, popping the first batter up. Her second out came on a wild put out from Skylynne Ellazar, playing a ball off her chest to Juli Strange for a force at second. Another pop up would seal the deal and give Dewey her first save of the season.
The Terps will return to Amy S Harrison Field tomorrow to close out play at the Highlander Classic vs. Weber State.
