COLLEGE PARK, Md. – While head coach Randy Edsall and the Maryland football team prepare to meet their new Big Ten rivals on the field, the Maryland Concessions team is preparing to welcome not just loyal returning Maryland fans, but also new guests from the Midwest and introduce them to warm Maryland hospitality and cuisine.
In preparation for these new visitors, the team has been cooking up some creative new menu items for the various vendors around Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.
The ‘CHESSIE” named after the Loch Ness Monster’s less famous Chesapeake Bay cousin, is a monster sized 24-ounce hot soft pretzel smothered in back fin crab dip and melted cheddar cheese, then topped with a dusting of Old Bay for two to four hungry fans.
Maryland crab meat shows up in several additional offerings, including Chesapeake nachos and crab fries, both incorporating fresh back fin crab meat and Old Bay. Pork BBQ nachos and traditional nachos are also available.
While most Big Ten fans are not located near the ocean, they will have the opportunity to experience an Ocean City tradition with Maryland Boardwalk Fries available throughout the stadium with vinegar and Old Bay for topping.
To celebrate joining the Big 10, the Maryland Dairy’s “B1G” ice cream flavor, will join other uniquely Maryland flavors including “Rockin Randy’ and “Fear The Turtle”. The new flavor, which combines a bourbon vanilla base, a raspberry melba red swirl, chunks of three historically Maryland cakes including Smith Island and Lord Baltimore and a splash of Triple Sec will be offered in several locations around Byrd Stadium.
Maryland’s traditional pit beef and pit turkey will take on a new twist as the meats are covered in a dry rub and slow smoked for over 14 hours before being finished over an open fire and then sliced to order in front of the fans.
Maryland Pulled Pork BBQ will also be slow smoked in a closed pit smoker before being laced with a specially created BBQ sauce and served on a locally baked bun.
“Curley’s Fresh” a new concourse kiosk named for the legendary Curley Byrd, will cater to fans seeking more healthy alternatives. Fans can expect freshly prepared fruit cups, hummus and pita chips, a fire roasted chicken Caesar wrap, a vegan salad and fruit juice to be served at the new kiosk.
Local favorite Seasons Pizza will also be featured throughout the stadium
Fans will have the opportunity to enjoy quarter pound Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs along with fire grilled half-pound Black Angus burgers topped with fresh leaf lettuce, hand sliced tomato and onions.
In addition, bottomless tubs of freshly popped popcorn, chargrilled Italian sausage, burgers and Buffalo Chicken Sandwiches will be featured at various locations around the venue.
Byrd favorites like hand poured funnel cakes, cotton candy, Chick-fil-A sandwiches, Rita’s Italian Ice, chicken finger baskets and Pepsi products will continue to be sold throughout the stadium.
All Byrd Stadium offerings will be in compostable or recyclable packaging, as the venue goes zero waste in order to comply with the University of Maryland’s commitment to the environment.
Right outside of the stadium, a new Terp Town will offer a variety of pre-game dining options and a beer garden, offering all fans a sampling of Maryland hospitality.
