COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Eight former University of Maryland men’s lacrosse players took the field at the MLL All-Star Game Thursday night at Harvard Stadium in Boston and the Terps put on a show.

Team USA, which featured five former Terps, edged Team MLL, which had three former Terps, 10-9, on a last-second goal from Rob Pannell.

But it was Maryland’s all-time leading goal-scorer Joe Walters (2006) who filled up the box score.

Walters, who made his seventh MLL All-Star team despite playing in just three games this season due to commitments with the NLL’s Rochester Knighthawks, led all scorers with three goals.

Walters’ first score came early in the second quarter and tied the game for Team MLL at 3-3. He then scored the game’s lone extra-man goal early in the fourth quarter on a low-angle rip from just above right goal line extended. His final goal came with just 1:15 left in the gam to tie the score at 9-9.

Walters, who did not apply to be a part of the U.S. National Team selection process, wasn’t the only former Terp to find the net in the game. Drew Snider (2012) scored for Team USA late in the fourth quarter to give the national team a 9-8 lead before Walters tied the game just over a minute later.

“This is a great event, the fans are awesome; it was a great crowd here tonight,” said Walters following the game. “It’s fun to play against Team USA and we want to wish them the best luck in a few weeks. I know the coaches have some tough decisions, but it was fun being here tonight and was a great game.”

The other Terps vying for spots on the final 23-man roster that will comprise the U.S. National Team at the FIL World Championships in Denver from July 10-19 also stood out.

Lee Zink (2004) led the defensive effort for Team USA and had three groundballs. Jesse Bernhardt (2013) also made his presence known when the ball was on the ground, picking up a game-high six groundballs.

Short-stick defensive midfielders Jeff Reynolds (2009) and Dan Burns (2011) each had one groundball.

Jeremy Sieverts (2009) and Brett Schmidt (2011), who were both a part of the Team USA selection process, also competed for Team MLL. Schmidt had three groundballs, while Sieverts did not score on his two shots taken.

The final 23-man roster for Team USA, as outlined by FIL regulations, will be announced on Monday, June 30.
