COLLEGE PARK, Md. – When the University of Maryland joins the Big Ten Conference on July 1, the Terrapin women’s soccer team will embark upon a new journey against a new field of conference foes. But that doesn’t make the competition any less fierce.

Let’s take a look at Big Ten women’s soccer as the Terps prepare for their first season in the Big Ten in 2014.

Maryland’s History With The Big Ten

  • Maryland has only competed against five of the 13 other Big Ten schools in women’s soccer – Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio State, Penn State and Rutgers.
  • The Terrapins are a combined 11-9-1 (.548) vs. Big Ten competition.
  • Of Maryland’s 21 games against Big Ten opponents, 11 have come against Penn State and seven against Rutgers.

A Look Back at Big Games vs. the Big Ten

  • 1-0 win vs. Minnesota, Aug. 20, 2011
    • Danielle Hubka finished the game’s lone goal following a series of quality touches by fellow Terps Megan Gibbons and Becky Kaplan in the 20th minute to give Maryland a 1-0 win in the 2011 season opener at Ludwig Field.
    • The Gophers had a chance to even the match in the 88th minute when some miscommunication in the Terps’ defensive third gave Sheridan Reiners a good look at an open net, but reserve center back Kristen McAfee was able to recover and clear the shot away from danger before the ball could cross the goal line for the equalizer.
  • 1-0 win at Penn State, Nov. 14, 2004 – NCAA Second Round
    • The Nittany Lions had made a habit of knocking the Terps out of the NCAA tournament, ending Maryland’s season in both the 1999 and 2002 tournaments. The odds of the Terps reversing that trend in the 2004 tournament were long given the facts that Penn State had defeated Maryland, 6-0, earlier in the season at home and that the Nittany Lions had won 39 straight games at Jeffrey Field.
    • The game’s lone goal came in the 33rd minute following a Penn State foul that set up a free kick for the Terps. Danielle Malagari sent the ball down the right side for Kimmy Francis. She sent a good cross to the edge of the six-yard box where Mallory Mahar was able to get free from her defender and get on the end of it with a header, redirecting it past All-Big Ten keeper Erin McLeod.
    • The high-powered Penn State offense, which was led by All-Americans Tiffan Weimer and Ali Kreiger, desperately sought to tie the game in the second half and out-shot the Terps 11-1 in the final 45 minutes. But Maryland’s defense was up to the challenge, especially goalkeeper Nikki Resnick, who posted 10 saves, including turning away a 1-v-1 with Weimer in the 73rd minute.
  • 2-0 win vs. Indiana, Oct. 21, 1994 – George Mason Classic, Fairfax, Va.
    • The first-ever game for the Terps vs. an original Big Ten school ended in a 2-0 victory over the Hoosiers at the George Mason Classic.
    • Tricia Taliaferro scored the game-winning goal, while Michelle Deville added the insurance goal for the Terps.

The Big Ten In The Big Dance

  • Nine Big Ten teams, including Rutgers, which was in the Big East in 2013, earned a bid to the 2013 NCAA tournament.
  • Nebraska, Michigan and Penn State earned national seeds in the 2013 NCAA tournament.
  • The nine Big Ten teams, including Rutgers, went 7-8-2 combined in the 2013 tournament with Michigan advancing to the Elite Eight with wins over Milwaukee, Illinois State and Notre Dame.
  • Three Big Ten teams have made appearances in the College Cup – Penn State (1999, 2002, 2005 & 2012), Wisconsin (1988 & 1991) and Ohio State (2010).
  • Penn State was the NCAA runner-up in 2012, which Wisconsin was the runner-up in 1991.
  • All 14 teams in the Big Ten have appeared in an NCAA tournament.

Conference Primer

  • All 14 members of the Big Ten Conference compete in women’s soccer.
  • The Big Ten first recognized women’s soccer as an official conference sport in 1994.
  • Michigan State won the first-ever regular season title in 1994, while Wisconsin won the first Big Ten tournament in 1994.
  • Penn State has won 14 Big Ten regular season titles. Minnesota is the only other program to win multiple Big Ten regular season titles with three (Penn State & Minnesota shared the 2008 regular season championship). Michigan State, Nebraska, Ohio State and Wisconsin have won one regular season title each.
  • Penn State has won five Big Ten tournament titles, while Ohio State has won three each. Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin have each won two Big Ten tournaments, while Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska and Purdue have each won one.
  • The Big Ten did not hold a tournament in 2009 and 2010.
  • Prior to the 2013 Big Ten tournament, Nebraska and Iowa had never won a Big Ten tournament game. The two teams met for the 2013 Big Ten tournament title with the Cornhuskers edging the Hawkeyes, 1-0.
