LaFond Wins Twice at Kehoe Twilight

COLLEGE PARK, Md.Pat Cole, Avery Graham and Mamadou Niang each picked up individual victories for the University of Maryland men Friday at the Kehoe Twilight track and field meet.

Cole won the hammer throw, adding seven feet to his previous best in the event. Graham had the Terrapins’ fastest time in the 100-meter dash since 2000 and Niang won the 800 in an IC4A-qualifying time and Maryland’s best mark of the season.

For the women, Thea LaFond tied teammate Amina Smith for the women’s high jump title and came back to win the women’s triple jump later in the meet.

Smith and LaFond each cleared 6 feet, with teammate Amber Melville just behind to give Maryland a 1-2-3 finish. LaFond went 41-4.25 to win the triple jump.

Maryland will compete next in the ECAC and IC4A Outdoor Championships in two weeks at Princeton University.

MEET NOTES

  • Pat Cole added seven feet to his previous PR in the men’s hammer with a throw of 190 feet, 7 inches. His mark moves him into second all-time at Maryland and is the best mark for the Terps since 1981, when Alan Baginski set the school record of 194-3. Cole finished second to Penn State senior Will Barr, who went 192-4. Cole started the season with a career-best of 181-7.
  • Maryland’s Katie Nappi won the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:36.07. She outdueled teammate Chardé Barnes, who finished in 11:43.98.
  • Former Maryland All-American Kiani Profit won the women’s long jump. She went 19-8.25 to win on her old home track. Sydnee Pierce had a season-best of 17-6.75, with Laura Dally going 17-3.25.
  • Maryland senior Avery Graham won the men’s 100-meter dash in 10.56 seconds, moving him into 10th all-time at Maryland. It was the best mark by a Terrapin since 2000. Teammate Trey Sherman ran 11.05 to finish sixth.
  • Graham came back later to place second in the men’s 200 in a season-best mark of 21.35, the best Terp time of the year.
  • Emily VandeWater (2:15.79) and Rachelle Alexander (2:16.65) had season-bests in the women’s 800, while Bridget Nolan had her best mark of the year in the 5,000 (18:35.99).
  • Terp senior Mamadou Niang hit a qualifying time for the IC4A Outdoor Championships with his win in the men’s 800. He ran 1:51.35 to post the best time of the season by a Maryland male in the event. Dan Trettel also had a season-best at 1:53.29.
  • Amina Smith and Thea LaFond tied for the win in the women’s high jump. Each cleared 6-0 and had the same number of misses. Teammate Amber Melville was third at 5-10. Smith won the ACC Outdoor Championships two weeks ago.
  • Arielle Statham (56.42), Shade Pratt (56.60), Catherine Voelpel (58.01) each had season-bests in the women’s 400.
  • Becky Yep, usually a distance runner, had the top mark of the season for the Terps in the Rosalind Taylor Women’s 1,500, running 4:39.27.
  • John Davenport had a season-best in the men’s long jump at 22-0.75.
  • Assistant coach Danielle Siebert won the Charles Torpey Alumni Mile, covering the distance in 5:17.80, taking the lead coming off the final turn and holding off Conrad Laskowski.
  • Georgetown junior Hannah Neczypor won the women’s 1,500 in a stadium record mark of 4:21.66. Hoya freshman Rachel Paul also broke the old mark in 4:22.37. Brianna Felnagle of North Carolina had run 4:22.88 to win the 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Championship at the Kehoe Track Complex.
  • Penn State sophomore Kiah Seymour had a stadium record of 55.88 with her victory in the women’s 400 hurdles.
  • Kikanae Punyua (4:00.53) had a season-best in the men’s 1,500.
  • Taylor Tucker (1:04.12) and Jacqueline Tape (1:06.97) had season-bests in the women’s 400 hurdles, with Terrence Maliff (55.05) having his best on the men’s side.
  • Cici Onyekwere had a season-best 146-10 in the discus to finish second.
