After a Saturday afternoon victory over Georgia Tech, members of the Maryland baseball team joined family and friends and shaved their heads as part of their annual fundraiser for the Vs. Cancer Foundation.

Since mid-February, the team has actively been fundraising money for the Vs. Cancer Foundation and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The head shaving event served as an additional show of support for the cause.

The foundation encourages athletes and communities to unite and fundraise for children with cancer. As of Saturday, the team had raised $18,836. The team made this gesture to acknowledge and support anyone who has been affected and impacted by cancer.

“I know everyone put in a lot of effort this past month and a half or so and we raised a lot of money and this just kind of tops it all off,” Anthony Papio said. “It’s fun and it’s a great way to show that we support the fight against cancer. I know a lot of guys have been affected personally by cancer so this is a pretty cool thing. It was a lot of fun.”

This event allowed the team to show unity with those affected by the disease.

“It really puts everything in perspective for us,” Brady Kirkpatrick said. “These kids are tremendously strong, battling cancer everyday, and it’s just a way that we can show them that we’re behind them and helping them in their fight against cancer.”

Head coach John Szefc looked forward to the event because of how many people are affected by cancer and spoke of the importance that an event like this one has.

“Those guys have worked hard to raise money for [Vs. Cancer Foundation],” Szefc said. “We’ve got a lot of guys affected by that disease in our program. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t been one way or another. It’s a little thing, but it’s a big thing. You talk about doing the little things in baseball on the field, this is a little thing off the field, but I think it ends up being a big thing.”

This year, the Maryland baseball team joined forces with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in its effort to raise funds for the foundation. Last week, the committee held its second annual Student-Athlete and Staff Volleyball Tournament to help contribute.
