Each week during the 2013-14 season a Maryland student-athlete, who has shown excellence on and off the playing field, will be selected as the Solomon Eye Associates Terp of the Week. This week's Solomon Eye Associates Terp of the Week is junior Juliet Vongphoumy of the Maryland women’s golf team.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior Juliet Vongphoumy placed her name in the Maryland women’s golf record books last week, posting a program-record low 8-under par score at the Web.com Intercollegiate at Marsh Landing Country Club.
“Juliet played the best golf I’ve seen her play this week. From top to bottom, everything was solid. To shoot three subpar rounds is very impressive and it goes hand-in-hand with the hard work she’s been putting in,” assistant coach Tiffany Prats said.
The Providence, R.I., native, has been a rock for the team this season, averaging a score of 74.60 per round in the fall. She competed in five fall tournaments and finished third at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate.
In Ponte Vedra Beach, the Vongphoumy went even lower, recording a 69 and 68 in the first two rounds. The junior followed that up with a 71 in the third and final round to finish in a tie for second place. The Terps finished fifth overall.
An All-ACC selection in 2012, Vongphoumy will be an important piece of the Terps’ performance in the ACC Women’s Golf Championship this weekend in Greensboro. The tournament runs from April 17-20 and Maryland tees off on Thursday at 8 a.m.
“We have so many positives to take away from this week and we hope to build on this momentum as we head to our final ACC Championship next week,” Prats said.
