COLLEGE PARK, Md.Amina Smith has ascended to new heights. Literally.

The University of Maryland senior had a career performance last Friday at the Pepsi Florida Relays, setting a new outdoor personal record in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 0-3/4 inches – matching the best mark in the nation so far this season.

She earned the vote this week as the Solomon Eye Associates Terp of the Week.

It marked the first time the Lusby, Md., product had cleared 6 feet outdoors and tied her for third all-time on the Terrapins’ list in the event. She is one of only six Maryland women ever to have cleared that milestone.

She tied with two other competitors at that height at the meet in Gainesville, Fla., which drew seven women’s teams ranked nationally. Smith earned second when the tie was broken by fewest misses, and all three who tied at that height now sit atop the rest of NCAA Division I in the women’s high jump.

Smith, who also earned the weekly track and field award from the Atlantic Coast Conference, is the second track student-athlete to earn Terp of the Week this season. Junior Thea LaFond earned the honor at the end of the indoor season.

Maryland has this week off in order to train for the ACC Outdoor Championships next Thursday through Saturday in Chapel Hill, N.C.
