COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland field hockey team opened its spring outdoor season over the weekend with strong starts against Delaware, Rutgers and James Madison at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

After a quick Delaware goal on a penalty corner in the opening minute of play the Terps attack unit was dominant finding the back of the net seven times for a 7-1 victory. On Sunday, Maryland beat Big Ten opponent Rutgers University 4-0 and reached a scoreless tie after 30 minutes with James Madison.

“The coaching staff is excited about our team speed and deliberate counter attack style to goal,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “Delaware, Rutgers and James Madison were very athletic so the competition was just what we needed. We’re playing a highly aggressive, full field-style in both attack and defense which seems to match our character well and motivate each athlete."

This Friday, Maryland will travel to Princeton for a match at 6 p.m. and turn around to host a clinic and 5 vs. 5 tournament Saturday and Sunday. Over the weekend, 70 club teams in the under-14, 16 and 19 age groups will compete.

“We always look forward to playing Princeton,” Meharg said. "They are athletic, well-coached, disciplined and strive to play at the highest NCAA level. Our team works hard on all fronts and we look forward to hosting the nation’s top clubs at our stadium over the weekend.”

“As we prepare to host the NCAA Championships in College Park, November 20-23, 2014 the players, coaches and parents will receive NCAA tournament information and pre-ticket ordering opportunity."

The Terrapins went 22-2 in the 2013 season, winning the program’s 10th ACC title with a 2-0 victory over North Carolina in Boston. Maryland advanced to its 17th Final Four and 16th under Meharg.
