Terps Set For Sweet 16 Showdown With Lady Vols

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The fourth-seeded Maryland women’s basketball team (26-6) will take on top-seeded Tennessee (29-5) Sunday at noon at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky. in the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen.

The Terps-Lady Vols matchup will be shown on ESPN, as well as ESPN3.com.

For the full NCAA Tournament bracket, log on to http://www.ncaa.com/interactive-bracket/basketball-women/d1. The winner of Sunday’s matchup will take on either third-seeded Louisville or seventh-seeded LSU Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Elite Eight.

Maryland is coming off of a 69-64 win over fifth-seeded Texas Tuesday in College Park in the NCAA Second Round. Senior Alyssa Thomas led the Terrapins with her 26th double-double of the year with 16 points, all in the second half, and 11 rebounds. Alicia DeVaughn added 12 points, while Laurin Mincy and Lexie Brown each had 10.

This is the first meeting between Maryland and Tennessee since Nov. 26, 2005. The Lady Vols won, 80-75, in St. Thomas and own the all-time series, 10-4.

In last year's NCAA Tournament run, the fourth-seeded Terrapins cruised past Quinnipiac, 72-52, in the First Round in College Park, then beat Michigan State, 74-49 to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. Maryland fell to eventual national champion Connecticut in the Sweet Sixteen in Bridgeport, Conn.

This marks Maryland’s 22nd NCAA Tournament appearance and 10th in head coach Brenda Frese’s 12 years. She's led Maryland to four Elite Eights, five Sweet Sixteens, a Final Four and the 2006 NCAA Championship. Her all-time record with Maryland in the Tournament is 22-8 (.733). The Terps are 11-2 in NCAA Tournament games in Comcast Center.

The Terrapins are a top four seed for the 13th time in school history No. 4 seed for the third time. They are 5-2 all-time as the fourth-seed.

Thomas became Maryland’s all-leading scorer in the men’s or women’s history Sunday with her 13 points. She passed Juan Dixon (2,269) and currently has 2,287 career points.
