The GymTerps are coming off an exciting week! Last week was spring break so we all had time to relax and catch up on sleep. Without having classes to worry about we were able to put all of our focus into practice and EAGL preparation. The week started with a day off on Monday. We were able to take a trip to the mall and get some spring shopping done!
On Tuesday morning we headed to BelPre Elementary school for our annual trip. We put on a short assembly for the elementary schoolers, and afterwards we were each assigned a class to read a book too. This is one of my favorite trips of the year. We are able to teach the children about the importance of reading and working hard everyday in school. The kids always have a great time and have the cutest questions to ask us! (My personal favorite this year was "Can you hold a handstand for 5 hours?"). On Wednesday we had another group of elementary schoolers come into the gym for a lesson on balance and motion. We set up an obstacle course for the kids, and they had a great time!
Besides working with the kids, we also had team events on Tuesday and Wednesday. The team was extremely focused the entire week and we hit some awesome team events! We treated practices this week like we were at the EAGL championship. We played loud "crowd noise" on the stereo and stood in courals during team events.
On Thursday morning we left for New Hampshire! Upon arriving, we had a nice team dinner on Thursdaynight and headed to bed early knowing that we had a long weekend ahead of us. Friday morning we headed to the Whittemore center for a light practice. During practice, we were able to get a feel for the equipment and visualize the surroundings. After practice we grabbed a quick lunch at Panera and headed back to the hotel to prepare for our EAGL banquet. EAGL banquet was really fun! 14 of the gymterps earned All-EAGL honors!
Saturday finally arrived and we were so excited to compete! We started off strong on floor exercise and really got the momentum rolling. Next, we went to vault and hit 6 beautiful vaults! The whole meet we were neck in neck with other teams... Third, we went to bars and continued to hit beautiful routines. We were more determined than ever heading into beam. We knew we had to finish the job! On beam, we ran into a little trouble missing one routine but we hit five beautiful routines, finishing with a championship performance from Steph (congrats Stephy for being named 2014 EAGL beam champion!).
In the end, we had our highest team score of the season (195.7) and came in second place! The team was ecstatic as we were able to secure a spot at NCAA regionals!! This week we find out where we are headed for the first rounds of NCAAs. We can't wait to keep working hard and show everyone what the gymterps are made of!
Be sure to tune in to Tumble Talk next week to find out where we are headed for regionals!
