PHILADELPHIA - The No. 2 Maryland women’s lacrosse team utilized a strong first half to pick up its 10th win of the 2014 campaign as it topped No. 6 Penn 15-5 Wednesday.
Brooke Griffin, Beth Glaros and Bryn Boucher all tallied hat tricks as Maryland (10-0, 3-0 ACC) held its fifth opponent to five or fewer goals. ACC Offensive Player of the Week Kelly McPartland added five points on two goals and three assists. Taylor Cummings and Zoe Stukenberg each added two scores.
The Terps wasted no time getting their offense running as Griffin and Glaros each scored goals in the first two minutes of the game for an early 2-0 Maryland lead. Glaros then extended that cushion to three with an assisted tally by Kelly McPartland with about 20 minutes remaining in the period.
Following a Cummings free position score, Penn (4-2) finally managed to secure a goal at the 16:40 mark for a 4-1 score. Maryland then boasted a five-goal run, which included two goals each by McPartland and Stukenberg – to stretch its advantage to 9-1 before a late Quaker goal made it a seven-goal contest at the half.
Griffin opened up the second half with a man-up goal at 23:40 for a 10-2 tally but Penn quickly answered one minute later with a Tory Bensen man-up score to push Maryland’s lead back to seven.
Glaros and Griffin made it a 12-3 contest with a pair of goals around the 21-minute mark and the Terps outscored Penn 3-2, including three goals by Boucher, down the final stretch to remain unbeaten in 2014.
Maryland was once again dominant on the draw, capturing the category 18-4 with the help of a game-high six by Cummings. The Terps were a perfect 11-for-11 on the clear, despite a rain-drenched Franklin Field making for nasty playing conditions.
Maryland returns to action Saturday for a game at James Madison at 2 p.m.
