Big Ten Announces 2014-15 Basketball Opponents

COLLEGE PARK, Md. –  The seventh-ranked Maryland women’s basketball team announced its Big Ten opponents for the 2014-15 season Friday. The Terrapins will play an 18-game conference slate beginning next year.

The Terps (23-5, 11-4 ACC) will welcome all five of the Big Ten teams that are currently ranked to College Park next year. No. 8 Penn State, No 16 Nebraska, No. 19 Purdue, No. 21 Michigan State and No. 25 Iowa will all come to Comcast Center next season. No. 24 Rutgers, who will  join the Big Ten next season, will also make its way to College Park.

Maryland will play five teams twice in home-and-home matchups – Indiana, Michigan State, Nebraska, Penn State and Rutgers.

The Terrapins will play four teams only at home in Comcast Center – Illinois, Iowa, Ohio State and Purdue. The Terps will play four teams only on the road – Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern and Wisconsin.

Maryland is 44-29 (.603) all-time against its 2014-15 Big Ten opponents and is 12-4 (.750) against them in head coach Brenda Frese’s 12 years. She is 24-10 (.706) all-time vs. Big Ten opponents.

In her one season coaching in the Big Ten (2001-02), Frese led Minnesota to a record of 22-8 overall, 11-5 in Big Ten play and an NCAA Tournament berth. She was named Associated Press National Coach of the Year in April 2002.

The Terrapins are ranked No. 9 in the latest Associated Press poll and No. 7 in the USA Today Coaches poll.

Maryland will close the regular season Sunday with a 2 p.m. game vs. Virginia Tech (14-14, 4-11) at Comcast Center for Senior Day. The game can be seen live online through TerpsTV Premium on umterps.com. Live stats will be at umterps.com and live updates will be at twitter.com/umdwbb.

Prior to Sunday’s contest, the Terrapins will honor their five seniors in Sequoia Austin, Alicia DeVaughn, Katie Rutan, Alyssa Thomas and Essence Townsend. After Sunday’s game, Thomas’ jersey will be honored in the rafters of Comcast Center. She will be the ninth Terrapin with her jersey honored.

The game vs. Virginia Tech will be Maryland’s final ACC regular season game. There will be a pre-game alumni autograph session, a commemorative ACC timeline poster for the first 5,000 fans in attendance. Fans will also be able to take photos with the Terrapins’ ACC championship trophies and will be able to share their favorite ACC moment on an interactive "My Favorite ACC Moment Wall.”

The March 2 game will also be the Team Tyler game, in which the Terps support leukemia awareness. Fans will be able join the national bone marrow donor registry courtesy of There Goes My Hero, a local non-profit that funds blood cancer research, family support programs, and education programs to encourage public support and use of the bone marrow registry. Fans can donate to the Johns Hopkins Division of Pediatric Oncology at the Team Tyler table on the concourse. Checks can be made payable to the Kimmel Cancer Center, Pediatric Oncology.
