GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Jake Stinnett has been selected the Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week for his performance in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader against Bryant, the league announced Monday.
Stinnett tossed eight innings of one-hit ball and struck out a career-high 11 batters in Maryland’s 3-0 win over Bryant. He retired the first 17 batters he faced and took a perfect game into the sixth inning and a no-hitter into the seventh. In all, Stinnett faced 26 batters – two over the minimum – in his eight-inning stint.
The native of Vista, Calif., is one of only three Maryland pitchers in the last five seasons to total 11 or more strikeouts in a game. Jimmy Reed had 11 Ks against Boston College on May 16, 2013, Sander Beck struck out 11 against Army on Feb. 25, 2011, and Brett Harman fanned 12 against Boston College on April 11, 2010.
Maryland returns to action against James Madison Tuesday at 4 p.m. from Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park in Harrisonburg, Va.
