College Park, Md. (Comcast Center)

No. 8 Maryland 87, Florida State 77

Head Coach Brenda Frese

Opening Statement:
“I definitely thought it was a game of runs. Obviously, when we were able to get the lead early, I liked how we asserted ourselves in the first half. I thought Florida State did a really nice job of just hanging around and being aggressive. Natasha Howard was obviously sensational inside for Florida State and we had no answer for it. Credit to Alyssa and Katie and the balance that they had. When you talk about made baskets, I thought we were really unselfish. We shot the ball extremely well.”

On the team playing after Duke loss:
“Coming back, I thought we were really fatigue. I thought you saw us get tired. We were definitely worn down. With three games left, we have to be able to recover quickly.”

On Florida State’s defense:
“We realized they were playing us jam packed on the inside. Katie got really easy looks and shot the ball with a lot of confidence. We did a great job finding her with inside and outside look passes.”

On Katie Rutan’s shooting tonight:
“It’s fun to watch when Katie’s shooting the ball that well. It makes us more dangerous as a team to have that kind of presence. “

On Tierney Pfirman’s performance:
“Tierney is really coming along. We’ve been able to see that in practices. She just gives us so much firepower on the offensive end with how she moves the basketball. She has a really high IQ and is a tremendous punch for us.”

Senior Forward Alyssa Thomas

On her career-high 12 assists she had tonight:
“When you have Katie [Rutan] hitting shots like she was it makes it easier. And when you have [Brionna Jones] inside sealing so well, they make it easy for me to get assists.”

On being one triple-double short of tying the NCAA record:
“It’s cool. Triple-doubles are hard to come by, but I can’t get them without my teammates so I think that makes them even more special.”

On being a facilitator:
“Just coming out, I saw people were open so I was just trying to get it to the open player.”

Senior Guard Katie Rutan

On shooting over defenders:
“I don’t really see a person. I had open shots and coach always says that shooters need to make open shots and I tried to do that today.”

On tying the Maryland record for three pointers made in a game:
“I didn’t know that happened until coach told me in the locker room. It’s awesome. I heard that I’m tied with Christy Toliver, she’s an amazing player. I’m glad I could tie with her.”

Freshman Center Brionna Jones

On covering Natasha Howard:
“It was tough because I was trying to keep her from driving, but she would pull up. Then I would try to contest her shot and she would drive to the basket. So it was tough, she had a countermove to everything I threw at her and she’s just a really good player.”

Florida State Head Coach Sue Semrau

On tonight’s game:
“I’m just so impressed with Maryland. Not just with their interior, which is what we wanted to take away, and we did a good job of doing that until Katie went off shooting the three, which is a hard combination to guard. They have so many weapons, and they are hitting their stride now. I like my young team. I like their fight and the kid next to me [Natasha Howard], and we are excited by what we have left.”

On FSU’s fight and determination in the game:
“When you have three returning players on your team, so it was nice to see that when things weren’t going our way on the scoreboard, we continued to try and find a way to make it a competitive ball game.”

On Katie Rutan:
“I think you have to pick your poison. Their interior game is so good, and then you’ve got Alyssa Thomas who can go both inside and outside, that is just a dangerous combination. And then you add someone that is shooting the ball like Katie Rutan. Lexie Brown did a good job of shooting the ball too. She threw down a couple of daggers.”

On the physicality of the game in the first half:
“We are great if that is how we can play all the time. I think Maryland is great is that’s how they can play all the time. It’s understanding that consistency. That’s not really Natasha Howard’s game. She is not a physical player. She can use her quickness, but you are used to having freedom of movement, and you don’t have it, then you have to force that foul call. It’s very curious, and I know that as women’s basketball coaches we are trying to figure out in what direction we need to go.”

On Alyssa Thomas:
“She is just so good with the ball. She’s good without the ball. She’s good inside and outside. She can do a lot of different things to a defense. I think she had a zillion assists. You have a kid that can power inside and pass like that it makes her a special player.”

On if Thomas passing more altered their game plan early on:
“No, not with Thomas. It altered our game plan with Rutan being on the other end. When she is knocking those down, that is a pretty good assist to get. You have to pick your poison.”

Senior Forward Natasha Howard

On her performance:
“It really doesn’t matter how many points I score. I just want to help my team and help my team get better every single day. It doesn’t matter if I score 35 or 40 points. I just want my team to get better at the end of the day.”

On their second half:
“We poured our heart out there. We fought till the end. We didn’t give up.”
