COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women’s tennis team will attempt to rebound from its first loss of the season with a dual match against No. 37 Columbia in New York Saturday. Action is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

The Terps (4-1, 0-0 ACC) split its two matches last weekend. Nataliya and Olga Bredikhina propelled Maryland to its win over Old Dominion, winning in doubles and then capturing their singles matches.

Against St. John’s, the Terps won their fifth doubles point in as many matches, but were unable to capitalize on a number of leads in singles. Olivia Gaudreault was a standout performer, while Natalyia Bredikhina once again won in singles and doubles.

The match against Columbia will be Maryland’s first against a ranked opponent this season and will provide a measuring stick for the squad heading into ACC play.

Scouting the Opposition

2014 Columbia Lions (4-1, 0-0 Ivy League)
Roster Schedule Statistics

Columbia enters Saturday’s contest after two straight wins against ranked opponents. The Lions defeated No. 69 Princeton and No. 32 Yale to win the ECAC Championship.

No. 57 Kanika Vaidya leads the singles lineup for Columbia. The sophomore from Singapore went 29-5 and was a second team All-Ivy League selection as a freshman last season. The Lions also feature two ranked doubles teams. Vaidya and Bianca Sanon are the 32nd-ranked squad while Crystal Leung and Tina Jiang slot in at No. 24.

The teams faced off last season College Park. Vroni Van Berlo was able to defeat Sanon at No. 1 singles, but the Terps fell, 6-1.  Only three Terps currently on the roster competed in that match.

 The Changeover

Previewing the Terps: By the Numbers

1 – The number of individual titles the Terps took home as a team in the fall.  Olga Bredikhina defeated Princeton’s Caroline Joyce, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, to take the Flight B singles title at the Cissie Leary Invite in Philadelphia.

2 – Daria Panova’s years as Maryland’s head coach. A standout player at Oregon as a a collegian, Panova steadied the ship in her first season in College Park, providing a clear and consistent demeanor for her young team. The Russia native also made history in her opening campaign, helping the Terps to only their second win over ACC rival Duke since 1998. The Terps took down the No. 11 Blue Devils, 4-3, in a thrilling late season match.

4 – The number of newcomers the Terp roster contains this season. Freshmen Kristina Hovsepyan, Olivia Gaudreault, Alexandra Stanova and Cassandre Thebault added a new energy to Panova’s outfit in the fall.  The young Terps will be relied to perform in important matches come the spring season, especially during the ACC slate.

9 – Points that Welma Luus notched for the Maryland field hockey team during the fall. The South Africa native played both sports for the Terps in the fall and was a spark off the bench for a squad that reached the final four. Luus missed all of last season with a shoulder injury, but provided the Terps with valuable leadership as a volunteer assistant coach.
