Stephanie Giameo won the all around in a significant win for the Terps in an EAGL showdown Monday night at Comcast Center. Maryland (4-3, 3-2 EAGL) defeated conference foes George Washington, Pittsburgh and Towson in a quad meet that extended Maryland’s undefeated record at home.

Maryland totaled a season-high 195.225 team score. Pittsburgh finished second with 194.900, George Washingotn was third with 193.825 and Towson was fourth with 188.700.

The Terps hit season-high team marks in three events and had nine individual scores that tied or beat personal records. Giameo helped lead the Terps as she finished in the top three in three of her four events. Freshman Nikola Chung also served as an important piece for Maryland with a first-place finish on bars and a third-place mark on vault.

“I’m just really proud of the team,” head coach Brett Nelligan said. “It’s been such a tough start to the season between the falls and the injuries. It’s been really hard on the team and the coaches, too. I’m proud we put it all together.”

The Maryland freshmen especially stuck out tonight and stepped up in the absence of injured teammates. Emily Brauckmuller led the Terps off on both vault and floor and Sarah Faller performed in the starting spot on beam.

“Sarah [Faller] continues to impress,” Nelligan said.” Week in and week out we’ve put her in tough situations. I thought Emily [Brauckmuller] had a huge meet tonight, too. We needed a big start off to the whole meet on vault and she gave it to us. We needed a big start on floor and she did that. And Nikki Chung, we’ve been counting on her when we lost Katy [Dodds] on bars and she has done a great job.”

The Terps started the night on vault and had huge performances from Giameo, Chung and Karen Tang, all of whom placed in the top five on the event. Giameo’s 9.825 was a team-high mark for second place. Chung’s personal-best 9.800 earned her third and Tang finished fifth with a 9.750.

The Terps then went to bars, where they showed complete dominance. Chung, Giameo and Faller all hit 9.775s to tie for first place along with Pittsburgh’s Jacqueline Lucci. These were personal records for both Chung and Faller. The team’s overall score of 48.750 ties the season-high mark it achieved last weekend at New Hampshire.

In the third rotation, Faller led off the Terps on beam hitting another personal record of 9.725. Giameo performed with her usual poise and earned a 9.850 for second place. Maryland scored a season-high 48.625 on the event that had given Maryland inconsistency earlier in the season.

Maryland trailed Pittsburgh entering the final rotation, but hit remarkable routines on floor to clinch the win. Ebony Walters anchored the event and hit a 9.900 tying for first place in the meet and equaling her career high. Tang followed her career-high performance last weekend with a 9.875 to finish third. Alex Zimmermann tied her personal record with a 9.825 and finished fifth. Dani Kram also scored a personal record with a score of 9.725. Maryland’s overall score of 49.150 marked another season high for the team.

Giameo earned a first place all-around score of 39.225 as Maryland’s lone gymnast in all four events. Her consistently strong performances have helped inspire the team throughout the season.

“She’s great,” Nelligan said. “She’s really stepped into a leadership role. She’s a captain, but she’s a junior. With Katy Dodds out and some of our other injuries she’s really stepped up vocally and also in her performances to give her team the confidence to compete with their hearts.”

Maryland returns to action in a tri meet Saturday Feb. 15 when they host Bowling Green and Yale at 2 p.m. at Comcast Center.
