SYRACUSE N.Y. – National Player of the Year candidate Alyssa Thomas notched her fifth career triple-double and freshman Lexie Brown added a career-high 31 points as No. 8 Maryland cruised to an 89-64 win over Syracuse at the Carrier Dome Sunday afternoon.

Thomas had 11 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for her third triple-double this year. She has had a triple or double-double in 18 of the Terrapins’ 21 games. She is one of just five players in NCAA history to notch five or more triple-doubles in a career.

Brown went 7-for-8 from outside the arc for her career-high 31. She added seven assists as the Terrapins (17-4, 5-3 ACC) notched 25 assists on 35 field goals made. Freshman center Brionna Jones, who made her first career start Sunday, added 10 points and freshman Shatori Walker-Kimbrough had 17, including 14 in the first half.

After taking an 8-4 lead on a three-point play, the Orange (16-6, 5-4) missed seven shots and committed four turnovers as Maryland went on a 20-5 run to take a 24-13 lead midway through the opening half.  Walker-Kimbrough added nine straight points in the run. Maryland pushed its lead to 17 at 46-29 at halftime.

"Everybody contributed," head coach Brenda Frese said. "They did a tremendous job sharing the basketball. For Lexie, it was fun to be able to watch. It's a great road win, but now for us every game you've got to get ready to play.”

Brittney Sykes led Syracuse with 22 points, 14 in the second half in a futile attempt to rally the Orange.

Thomas is now tied with Kristi Toliver for No. 3 all-time at Maryland with 2,078 points and Tianna Hawkins for third in rebounding with 1,075. The Terps beat the Orange 37-27 on the glass and outscored them 40-28 in the paint. Maryland shot 61.4 percent (35 of 57).

Maryland broke it wide open early in the second, hitting eight straight shots in a 20-6 spurt to take a 31-point lead less than 5 minutes in. Brown hit a 3 to start it, Jones scored seven points inside, and Brown finished it with a 3-pointer from the right corner and a fast-break layup with 15:45 left.

The Terrapins are ranked No. 8 in the latest Associated Press and No. 9 in the USA Today Coaches polls.

Next, the Terrapins will host Pittsburgh (10-11, 2-5) Thursday at 7 p.m. in College Park. Maryland Athletics will be celebrating celebrating National Girls & Women In Sports Day prior to the game.

Youth are invited to “Train with the Terps” beginning with check-in at 5:15 p.m.  Members of Maryland’s women’s teams will be on hand to participate in various sports from 5:30-6:45 p.m.  Following the event, participants will move to the Comcast Center for the Terps-Panthers game.

Parents can register their youth (girls, grades K-8) by clicking here.  Parents are invited to call the ticket office at 1-800-IM-A-TERP to order tickets for the Maryland/Pittsburgh women’s basketball game.  Youth are free. The event is limited to the first 200 participants registered.
