Three Terps Post Wins at Hokie Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va.Becky Yep, Amber Melville and Thea LaFond each earned individual victories over the weekend at the Hokie Invitational track and field meet held at the Rector Fieldhouse.

Yep and teammate Kate Kanetzky finished 1-2 in the 5,000-meter run on Saturday. Yep just bested her PR with a winning run of 17:29.95, with Kanetzky finishing in 17:44.87.

Those two also competed in the 3,000 on Friday, with Yep also running a personal best of 9:58.34 to finish ninth. Her time moved her into 10th all-time at Maryland. Kanetzky ran 10:06.52 in the 3K on Friday.

For the second straight week, Melville cleared 6 feet to win the women’s high jump. Teammates Amina Smith (third) and Thea LaFond (sixth) went 5-7.75 as the Terps continued to do well in the high jump in the early season.

LaFond won the women’s triple jump on Friday, picking up her fifth individual title of the indoor season. She went 40-9 to win by a full foot over her closest rival.

Junior Myah Hicks led a strong Maryland showing in the 1,000 on Friday. She finished third in 2:50.40, moving into second place all-time at Maryland in that event. Julie Sinkovitz was fifth in 2:52.73, good enough for seventh all-time at Maryland.

Sophomore thrower Chioma Onyekwere had a good weekend, placing second in the shot put (48-4) and fifth in the 20-pound weight throw (56-4).

Maryland’s distance medley relay team of Hicks, Catherine Voelpel, Sinkovitz and Alexa Squirini was third in 11:54.55, the ninth-fastest mark all-time at Maryland.

Transfer Lionel Wilson made his presence felt in a Terrapin uniform, going 49.17 to finish fourth in the men’s 400. The mark was ninth all-time at Maryland indoors.
