CHAPEL HILL, N.C. The Maryland wrestling team edged North Carolina, 18-15, for its first ACC victory of the season Friday night. Spencer Myers clinched the contest with a technical fall victory in the final match of the night.

Billy Rappo and Tyler Goodwin gave the Terps production at the lower weights, while No. 1 Jimmy Sheptock and Ty Snook put Myers in a position to clinch the match with runaway victories. It was the Terps first win since Dec. 1.

The match started at 125 pounds with Rappo defeating No. 20 Nathan Kraisser by a 9-4 decision. Goodwin followed up Rappo with his first win since returning from injury, a 7-4 victory over Troy Heilmann.

No. 6 Evan Henderson got the Tar Heels on the board at 141 pounds. The Carolina standout dispatched Shyheim Brown in a tight match to make the overall team score 6-3.

The Tar Heels then ripped off three straight wins to take control of the dual. Christian Barber needed the sudden death period to take care of Derrick Evanovich, before Jake Crawford took out Ben Dorsay, 4-2.

John Michael Staudenmayer put an exclamation point on the Tar Heel burst with a 7-1 victory over Josh Snook, giving the Heels a 12-6 lead going into the final four matches.

Ty Snook started the Terps climb back into the match with a dominant 7-2 win over Scott Marmoll. Sheptock nabbed the first bonus points of the dual, running past Alex Utley by 13-3 major decision.

At 197 pounds, Tony Gardner put forth an important performance that set up Myers to win the match for the Terps. The senior fell to Frank Abbondanza, 12-7, but prevented the Tar Heel from obtaining any bonus points with a big third period performance.

That teed up the match for Myers, who dominated from the start to finish against Frank Coe, ending the match with a technical fall at 4:48.

The Terps will look to make it two straight ACC victories on Friday Jan. 31 against No. 13 Virginia. Action is scheduled to get underway from Charlottesville, Va. at 7 p.m.
