No. 6/6 Maryland 77, Syracuse 62

Head Coach Brenda Frese

Opening Statement:
“Well it was definitely a game of runs. I really liked to see our team in terms of the different ways we were able to get stops and scores tonight. Obviously to have an inside-outside presence with the play both of Bri [Brionna Jones] AT [Alyssa Thomas]. It was tremendous. I thought offensively we did a really nice job of sharing the basketball and making plays for each other.”

On forcing turnovers and ball security:
“I thought we were really good defensively in the first half. We made a lot of plays for each other. Help the helper type of defense. Really making it difficult for them to be able to score.

Exciting because that’s something we’ve been working extremely hard as a team to be able to see us really connect in that and coming together from the defensive end. I thought our steals, our defense led to our transition. We did a tremendous job to be able to have an assist to turnover ratio like we did. Brene did a tremendous job handling the basketball. And making plays for one another.”

On the defense down the stretch:
“It’s not a surprise. When you talk about the depth we have this season and when you put our two teams together and they go against each other in practice; just the consistency we have with our play. I’m really excited for how hard this team’s been working. When you talk about how Brionna’s been doing from day one and all the extra workouts to prepare her for conference play. She was a huge difference maker for us. You can see how excited everybody is for her success. It makes us a different team to be able to have the presence we got from Bri.”

Redshirt Sophomore Guard Brene Moseley

On her performance:
“You never know when you’re number’s called. I think tonight I was just ready and prepared. We knew they were going to pressure and that was an opportunity to be able to control the game and control the pace and that’s what I tried to do tonight. And try to get the ball inside to Bri because she was working hard and AT was working hard too.”

Freshman Center Brionna Jones

On her career-high 18 points:
“I think I just went out there and worked hard. My team had my back and they were just ready to play with me. We were all working together. I think it was just because of my team.”

Senior Forward Alyssa Thomas

On balanced scoring:
“I think it makes it really hard for teams to guard us and to scout us when we have so many people getting involved. I think Syracuse had a tough job on who to key in on.”

Syracuse Head Coach Quentin Hillsman

Opening statement:
“Well, obviously I have to give credit to Maryland, they did a good job on the boards, they got a lot of turnovers in the half court, and they did a very good job of shrinking the floor which took away our dump off passes. Overall, I think our kids really competed and played hard. We were coming here to play the No. 6 team in the country that has one of the best players that I’ve seen in women’s basketball. Thomas is just a very tough guard. Whether in man, zone, or pressure, when she gets the ball one-on-one in the post and you don’t shrink the floor and get to her early you’re going to have a problem. She did a really good job getting balls of the glass. I thought that Maryland just played really aggressively. They got a lot of stuff of the glass, it just seemed like every shot they missed they got it back. I’m still very proud of my kids, I thought that the times that we had two sophomores and two freshmen on the floor they really played hard and competed. We need to keep playing hard and doing what we do. I feel good about where we are now.”

On tonight’s effort responding to deficit:
“When you look at our minutes and you look at who is playing, we have freshmen and sophomores on the floor for us; we have babies. We are going into these environments, these tough environments, competing and playing hard. I’m really proud of our effort and heart.”

On playing disciplined:
“You can’t go play a team like Maryland, who plays great defense, and start freelancing one on one. I thought when we made some plays when we tried to go one-on one-we got in trouble. When we played our system and ran our sets we got shots. I told our kids, ‘Our goal is to get a shot and don’t turn the ball over’. We had 21 turnovers, they had 30 points off those turnovers; if you cut that in half it’s a different ball game.”

On Brionna Jones’ performance tonight:
“She gets a lot because of Thomas. So Thomas creates a double team, we shrink the floor to her side and Jones is on the opposite side reaping the benefits. Jones is doing a good job being on the opposite block. She’s on the weak side to get the rebound; she had eight offensive rebounds. When you have eight offensive rebounds and make six points off free throws, that’s a ton. She did a very good job getting deep post position.”

Syracuse Guard Brianna Butler

On Maryland’s defense:
“I think Maryland is a great defensive team, but we also made mistakes. Both were factors in the amount of turnovers.” On if Syracuse is playing better as the season goes on:
“Yes, I definitely think we’re playing better. We’re a very young team and we have to keep growing.” On what has she learned about her team:
“I think that we’re a fighting team and we play hard for each other. We don’t give up and we keep growing each game.”
