Maryland gymnastics takes on West Virginia in its home opener at Comcast Center on Friday at 7 p.m. The GymTerps are coming off of a season-opening loss at Central Michigan last weekend.

Stephanie Giameo’s tie for first on beam and second-place all-around finish, as well as Kathy Tang’s tie for first place on bars, could not propel the Terps past the Chippewas.

Maryland looks to erase some of the uncharacteristic mistakes that were present last week as they take on the Mountaineers Friday. Giameo and Katy Dodds both earned NACGC/W (National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women) All-America honors last season.  Both gymnasts finished last season ranked eighth nationally; Giameo on beam and Dodds on vault. The two should be strong performers at Friday’s meet.

A former EAGL competitor, West Virginia started its 2014 campaign at Kentucky with Penn State and Ball State.  The Mountaineers fell to Kentucky and Penn State, both of whom were in the top-25 rankings at the time, but defeated Ball State.  West Virginia excelled on bars and won the event.

Last season, the Terps and Mountaineers faced off twice and split the series 1-1.  Maryland won in College Park and West Virginia won in Morgantown.  Friday marks the first of two meetings in 2014, as Maryland will play host twice this season, the second time on March 16.
