SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Freshman Lexie Brown of the sixth-ranked Maryland women’s basketball team was named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List Wednesday. She is one of two freshmen in the country named to the 29-player list for the award that goes to the nation’s top point guard.

Candidates exhibit the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills of Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman. Brown and Northwestern's Ashley Deary are the only rookies on the list. For the full list, log on to http://www.pointguard.org/.

Brown is currently second in the ACC in assist/turnover ratio (2.7) and is No. 5 in assists per game (4.6). The rookie has started in 11 of 14 games played this year and is averaging 7.2 points per game. Brown helps lead the Terrapins’ offense, is top 10 in the country in scoring offense (85.7), field goal percentage (48.3%), scoring margin (+28.9) and assists (20.4).

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame became the new host of the Nancy Lieberman Award in October 2013 after the Rotary Club of Detroit managed it for several years.

The Hall of Fame appointed a premier Selection Committee made up of top college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers to review the candidates. The list will be narrowed down to a final 20 in February, then final five by March. The Lieberman Award winner will be announced during Final Four weekend activities.

“It’s amazing to be able to have my name associated with some of the best point guards and most well-rounded female athletes at the college level,” Lieberman said. “This is the first year the award is hosted by the Hall of Fame and I think candidates will be even more aware of how prestigious this honor is.”

Previous winners of the Nancy Lieberman Award include former Terrapin Kristi Toliver, last year’s recipient Skylar Diggins, Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi.

Maryland will take on Syracuse Thursday at 8:30 p.m. in College Park. The Terrapins (14-1, 2-0 ACC) will look to win their 13th straight game in their first meeting with the Orange (12-4, 1-2) since 1984.

The first 1,000 fans at Thursday’s contest will receive free orange juice.  Each fan in attendance will receive a bingo card with various basketball events to look for throughout the game. Winners will receive prizes. For tickets, log on to the Terrapin Ticket Office online at umterps.com or call 1-800-IM-A-TERP.

The Terps-Orange matchup will be shown on RSN, which includes Comcast SportsNet locally, as well as Fox Sports South, ESPN3.com and the WatchESPN app. For the full list of channels to watch, log on to www.theacc.com.

Maryland and Syracuse haven’t met since 1984, with the Terrapins taking both prior meetings.

The Terrapins are ranked No. 6 in the latest Associated Press and in the USA Today Coaches polls.

Next, Maryland will host Georgia Tech (11-5, 1-2) Sunday at 2 p.m. as part of Mascot Day. Mascots from local teams will be on the concourse to join Testudo in welcoming fans.
