COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Postgame quotes following Maryland's 29-26 loss to Boston College.

Maryland Head Coach Randy Edsall

Opening Statement:

“That was a tough one for us today. Kids really played extremely hard and just unfortunate there at the end we didn’t come out on top, but kids really played hard.”

On calling timeout on the first field goal attempt at the end of the game:

“That’s one of those things where you make a decision and you take a timeout and he missed the first one, then he made the second one. It’s one of those things that just happens. Hindsight’s 20-20. Obviously, I shouldn’t have taken the timeout, he missed it. But it’s just one of those things that you feel, you’re doing something to put a little more doubt in the guy’s head and made a decision, just didn’t work out.”

On defending Boston College running back Andre Williams:

“Defense played very hard. Like I said, a few plays, maybe four or five plays I think, that they got some big plays on, but I thought our guys really played hard, really got after it on defense. It’s just unfortunate that we couldn’t have made just a couple more plays.”

Timeout after second down:

“What I tried to do there was try to take a timeout on second down, because I saw it was going to be third-and-four and then if we could have stopped them on third-and-four, I was going to go for a blocked punt, and stop it on. We didn’t get the stop on third down and then they kept moving. But I was looking to try to, when I saw what happened after first down, and when I saw what happened there on second down, I said ‘Well, I’m going to take a timeout and hopefully we get in a situation where we can try to stop them on third down and we’ll try to go for a blocked punt, but it didn’t work out that way.”

On containing Andre Williams after the first series:

“Well they had, just in terms of seeing the shifts that they did and getting lined up, we got lined up and our guys played extremely well. They played extremely hard and did a good job and like I said one or two plays we might have overran them a little bit.”

On the offensive pass interference call that negated a touchdown:

“I'll have to look at the film. I'll just have to look at the film."

On Maryland’s’ special teams:

“We had a miscommunication on the punt. But we’ve made some plays. Will [Likely] made a play on the kick returns and it was one of those games where it helped us. But like I said, we just had a miscommunication on the punt.”

On shifting focus to NC State next week:

I am happy with the way that we fought all the way through the end. We came up a little bit short and fighting through is exactly what we’re going to continue to do. We’re going to continue to work and keep getting better. This was a game that we felt we could have had, but we didn’t. So what you do is go back to work tomorrow and get better. That is the way we are going to approach it. We had a great effort and the kids really fought hard today. We just came off a little bit short.”

On the team playing with emotion the last two weeks:

“I think the kids worked very hard last week and this week. It’s just one of those things where they are going to continue to work hard. We’re going to give everything that we’ve got and work to the best of our abilities to do all the things we’ve got to do. Unfortunately, we just came up a little bit short today.”

Linebacker Marcus Whitfield

On the outcome of the game:

“It was definitely a tough loss. You can’t ask any more from the guys, they played their hearts out.”

On trying to contain Boston College’s rush attack:

“It was on the first series so everyone had their nerves all shook up, but we all just calmed down and started playing our defense. [Andre Williams] is a hard runner and granted, BC is a great team. They’ve been rushing the ball on everyone this year. We just tried to stop the rush as much as we could and tackle them for a loss and mess up their scheme.”

On being Senior Day:

“Everybody wants to win on their last senior day, but we have another game next week, so we are just looking forward to that game.”

Offensive Lineman Sal Conaboy

On being in an exciting back-and-forth game:

“It was an exciting game. Those are the types of games you want to play. My hat goes off to BC, they got it done.”

On the emotions of Senior Day:

“You want to go out there and play hard for your seniors and I think guys did that, we played hard. Like I said, Boston College just got it done tonight.”

On making adjustments:

“We made some adjustments during halftime. They had a lot of looks and they didn’t show too much that we didn’t see. It just came down to executing.”

Running Back Albert Reid

On the game:

“It was a tough loss. We gave away a few big plays. There is not much you can say about that. Everybody is feeling the same way. We could have won the game.”

On how they can bounce back from this:

“We just have to come out strong next week and practice hard. I know the guys are coming to come out pumped up this week knowing that we came off a tough loss. We are not trying to lose against NC State. We are going to come out all week ready to go and get that monkey off our back.”

Quarterback C.J. Brown

On if that was his toughest loss of his career:

“Yeah, absolutely. A last second field goal like that is pretty much what we did to Virginia tech last week. It got them right in the heart. This one is sour.”

On the momentum when they were up by 11 in the fourth quarter:

“We were moving the ball again and that turnover kind of hurt. We keep shooting ourselves in the foot. We have to be able to put people away. We were not able to do that. Boston College played great. Our defense played good. They knew what they were going up against. Their running back and offensive line are second to none. We had all the opportunities in the world today and we just did not capitalize.”

On the two-point run back off the blocked PAT:

“It swung the momentum, again. Just like that it was a zero to zero game. We had the ball and another opportunity to score. That was our mentality. We had been moving the ball all day. We felt like our worst enemy was us, with the penalties and the little miscues that we had. We just kept shooting ourselves in the foot.”

Boston College Head Coach Steve Addazio

Opening Statement:

“Obviously, I’m so excited to stand up here after getting our seventh win. We played a tough game. Two teams really battled against each other. I thought Maryland was really well prepared for this game. It was kind of the tale of a bunch of different swings in the game. You saw about everything out there. I’m really proud of the way out kids fought. They were resilient and never gave in. They had great faith and we had some great performances. Obviously, Andre [Williams] rushed for about 265 [yards], which put him over 2,000. We had 375 or so on offense. We made some chunk plays on offense. We held them to under 300 and I thought our defense played exceptionally well, especially in the first half. It was just one of those tough games with two evenly match teams just battling with each other. I’m proud of our team for going on to get a road ACC win on senior day here. My heart goes out to the kids at Maryland because I thought they fought really hard. I know how hard it is to lose a game like that on the final kick, but I’m proud of our guys and how resilient they are and how they represented our university. I can’t say enough good things about our staff and our team and how they’ve stuck together and fought.”

On if he’s ever seen a stranger fourth quarter:

“No. Right up through the blocked extra point that got returned for two points to tie the game up. The swings were unbelievable. I’ve got to do a better job of making sure to cover that blocked extra point. Everybody just kind of stood around and watched it. There was highs and lows and everything in between. There was a little bit for everybody.”

On quarterback Chase Rettig:

“I’ve been telling everybody for a long time that Chase has been extremely unselfish and resilient. I know he was disappointed early, but he showed great leadership and toughness. He made a couple of big throws that were really critical for us. I’m just happy for him and proud of him. I can’t say enough good things about Chase Rettig in terms of his leadership, his competitiveness and his value to our football team.”

On what he thought when running back Andre Williams was hurt:

“I was worried about him. I’m still worried about him. He’s a competitor, but I know he’s pretty banged up. He took a lot of shots in there like he does each week. We’re going to have a pretty beat up guy come tomorrow and we’ve just got to do the best we can to get him back. We’re a really physical team.”

On place kicker Nate Freese:

“I was honestly really confident [he’d make the kick the second time]. I didn’t know what to think on the first one. When I saw they called timeout and he missed it, I said to myself, he’s going to get this one. He’s a real confident guy. I have faith in players that are together and that prepare hard and believe in each other. Lets let our best players go win it at the end. That’s our strength. Nate Freese is one of our strengths.”

Boston College Players

Quarterback Chase Rettig

On the game-winning field goal:

“We had some confidence; we’re a fourth quarter team. I couldn’t imagine a better way to end the game than my roommate kicking a field goal.”

On it being a back-and-forth game:

“It went back and forth, we were down 10 at one point. A big emphasis today was just having faith and believing in situations that we could still win the football game. It just goes to show we have some trust in each other; we rallied around each other and ended up making the plays when it mattered the most.”

Running back Andre Williams

On getting the seventh win of the season:

“My goal this year was to win. Coach said something a few weeks ago that I took to heart “accomplishments are derivatives of success; real success are winning these games”. So that’s what we keep our minds on. Now we have to go get win number eight, I’ve never seen that before in my career at BC so this is history for us.”

On the touchdown run:

“These coaches are so smart; once they diagnose the situation, they have a play that’s going to work as long as we execute as an offense. On that play, it was designed to hit inside and they overplayed the boundary.”

Wide receiver Alex Amidon

On the fourth quarter:

“It was a crazy game. I’ve never won a game on a field goal like that. It was something unreal.”

On getting the seventh win:

“It’s important to secure the bowl and it’s great to secure a winning season. Those two things are awesome for this team.”

Place kicker Nate Freese

On having two chances to win the game towards the end:

“It was an exciting game. Everyone kept telling me ‘it’s coming down to you in the end’, and I’m glad we got a shot.”

On what he was thinking after the timeout:

“I heard it coming from their sideline, so I knew something happened. Going into that re-kick I was a lot more confident.”

On his out-of-the-ordinary and wild day:

“I take all the blame for that PAT, the one that they returned. I knew I had to help out the team and make up for it with that last kick.”

On what he was thinking about before making the game-winning kick

“I was calm. I was trying to get a better judgment of the wind, which going from my right to left. Being out there a little longer let me kind of got a better feel for it.”

Defensive end Kasim Edebali

On what the seventh win means:

“Right now I am still really emotional. This is everything we are about. Coach came in and said, ‘We were going to win this game in the fourth quarter. It’s going to be a game where you have to grind. Stay with executing the game plan and keep having faith in each other’ and in the end the outcome was great.”

On Maryland’s success with short passes:

“Everybody knows we play aggressively. If they sometimes catch us when we are not on-point with our technique, that’s where they could get us. They got a couple of screens that hit us pretty good, so we had to go to the sideline, get the corrections right, maybe switch up the defense a little bit, and then just keep playing our game.”
