Pitt Takes Down Maryland in Five Sets

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Mary Cushman tied a season-high with 19 kills and Ashlyn MacGregor notched a career-high 12 blocks as the Maryland volleyball team fell to Pittsburgh in five sets (15-25, 25-23, 25-20, 20-25, 13-15) Friday night.

Maryland (13-16, 5-12 ACC) jumped out to a 2-1 set lead after the intermission break, but the Panthers stormed back to win two consecutive sets and take the match.

The pair of sides matched each other point-for-point to a 12-12 tie in the fifth set, before Pitt took a 14-12 lead on a pair of critical points. Ashleigh Crutcher brought the Terps within one, but the Panthers’ Kate Yeazel finished closed the contest with a kill.

The Terrapins totaled 17 blocks in the contest, as Crutcher posted her seventh double-double of the season (18 kills, 12 digs). Amy Dion returned from a knee injury to tally 23 assists for the Terps.

Maryland’s most efficient set came in the third frame when it tallied 14 kills and six errors for a .216 hitting percentage. The Terps held Pitt to a .179 hitting percentage for the match.

Yeazel and Jessica Wynn combined for 40 kills for the Panthers, while Monica Wignot had 15 digs.

The Terps return to action in Comcast Pavilion Sunday as they host No. 14 North Carolina. The match marks Maryland’s final home ACC contest.
