Head Coach Mark Turgeon
On the game:
"We just wanted to execute better. Our secondary break had to be better, our zone offense had to be better, our half-court offense had to be better, we just talked about executing and doing our job. A lot the things we do, we play inside-out. We posted Dez (Wells) the first play, second play we got him a shot, Shaq (Cleare) made a great pass to Dez in the corner. I think it gave us a lift out there. So that was good. Then we had to play a lot of funny lineups because of foul trouble all that in the first half. I thought our bench was phenomenal. I thought Varun (Ram) gave us great minutes and I thought Damonte (Dodd’s) length helped us around the rim when he was in there. I thought Charles (Mitchell) was really good again... It was good to see Shaq having a good game. He was a force when he was in there."
On Varun Ram:
"He had a couple steals out there, some loose balls he came up with, some scrum plays he’s right in the middle of it. He’s going to foul out a lot, obviously. He’s got to play without fouling. I thought Varun was terrific. I really did. We need him. We’ve got to build depth. Varun’s going to be a part of that depth."
On Jake Layman:
"It’s hard to get him shots. It’s really hard to get Jake (Layman) shots because of the way people are guarding. I thought we did a better job screening for him, executing better and getting him some shots. He makes big ones for us. He’s playing with a lot of confidence. Defenisvely, he’s getting better. We need Jake to play the way he’s been."
Maryland forward Jake Layman
On his confidence:
"I just kept shooting. My teammates kept encouraging me to shoot and that gave me a lot of confidence to make some shots."
On Shaquille Cleare:
"He played with more confidence and he seemed very relaxed. I think the alley-oop sparked us and was a big play to start the second half."
On the slow start:
"We missed some shots early. We were not executing, but we played good defense and Shaq made some plays that helped spark us and get us going."
Maryland center Shaquille Cleare
On the game:
"The shots started dropping for me. I have been practicing well, but I just seem to be feeling much better. My back feels good and I am focused and working hard. I am feeling confident and ready to compete."
On the contributions from the bench:
"Charles has been playing great and giving us good scoring and rebounding off the bench. Varun was a spark plug tonight and was all over the court. It was awesome to see guys taking advantage of their opportunities and scoring baskets and making some plays."
Maryland guard Varun Ram
On his role:
"We are really working hard and it is great to have an opportunity to contribute. I need to make plays defensively, which can lead to baskets on the offensive end. We really focused and concentrated on making the necessary stops and each guy played a role in this victory for us."
On the response he received from the fans:
"I really appreciate all of their support. It's great. I didn't hear the (MVP) chants, but they are great and always behind us."
