Release: 10/25/2013

Hello Terp Nation,

Last Friday night, University of Maryland Basketball returned to historical Cole Field House to host Maryland Madness in conjunction with the start of the men’s and women’s basketball seasons.

More than 11,000 attendees came out and filled the arena that was home to so many iconic moments in our university’s history. Passion and electricity reverberated through Cole like old times.

It was special to see our proud past and current student-athletes come together and celebrate Maryland basketball. Former coaching greats Lefty Driesell, Chris Weller, Dottie McKnight and Gary Williams, all whom have left an indelible mark on Maryland basketball, joined us to celebrate in a building that elicited so many wonderful moments.  In addition, it was fun to visit with our legendary alumni, including Walt Williams, Tom McMillen, Vicky Bullett and Juan Dixon.

The event showcased our “Proud Past and Fearless Future” to the Maryland basketball community. It was a special evening for everyone involved. We continue to receive lots of feedback from those who attended and we appreciate each of your suggestions as we look to make the event even more entertaining next year.

Homecoming weekend is something I look forward to every year. All around campus, there will be various activities to get everyone excited and help create momentum for what will be a fun and exciting weekend in College Park.

Maryland football is 5-2 and hosts No. 9 Clemson on Saturday at 3:30. Wear your red and be sure to get there early to support your Terps. With your support and encouragement, we were able to come back in the closing minutes and defeat ACC rival Virginia, 27-26, two weeks ago.  In addition, Maryland will honor its 11 consensus All-Americans in football.  Six of those 11 greats will participate in our homecoming festivities at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium, including Dale Castro (1978-80), Gary Collins (1959-61), E.J. Henderson (199-2002), J.D. Maarleveld (1984-85), Jack Scarbath (1950-52) and Randy White (1972-74).

Prior to the football game, be sure to get another glimpse of the Terrapin men’s basketball team as it hosts its annual Red-White scrimmage in Comcast Center at 1:00 p.m.

Other weekend events include the nation’s number one ranked Terps field hockey program, which host home games tonight against Virginia at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday against Georgetown at 1:00 p.m. Women’s soccer will host Boston College in a pivotal ACC matchup Sunday at 1:00 p.m., while women’s tennis has a community relations fundraiser (Saturday) and track & field will host an alumni event on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday, wrestling will host their annual Red & Black wrestle-offs at noon on Sunday in Comcast.

Best of luck to volleyball, men’s soccer and women’s golf who are representing us on the road this weekend.

Look forward to seeing you on campus,

Kevin
