Senior Patrick Mullins scored two goals as the No. 4 Maryland men’s soccer team defeated Marshall 5-0 at Ludwig Field Tuesday night.

The Terrapins (6-2-5) relentlessly attacked the Thundering Herd (2-7-4) from the opening whistle and held a 16-6 shot advantage in the match. The Terps’ five goal win was their highest margin of victory this season.

Junior Dan Metzger put the Terps on the board in the 19th minute, one timing a rocket into the back of the net from 35 yards away. The goal was Metzger’s first of the season.

The Terps took a 2-0 lead off a Mullins’ penalty in the 22nd minute. Sophomore Tsubasa Endoh was fouled in the box and the ACC Co-Player of the Week slotted home the ensuing spot kick for his ninth goal of the season.

Sophomore David Kabelik made it 3-0 in the 44th minute when his 12-yard shot deflected off a Marshall defender and into the net. It was the Hungary native’s second goal of the season.

The only trouble for the Terps came at the end of the first half when senior Jake Pace was sent off with a red card following a confrontation with a Marshall defender.

Even with 10 men, the Terps peppered the Marshall goal for most of the second half.  Mullins notched his second tally in the 71st minute when junior Jereme Raley sent in a brilliant ball from the right wing that went from Mullins head to the back of the net.

The tally moved Mullins to sixth all-time in career goals at Maryland with 38, tied with Shane Dougherty.

Freshman Ryan Reid finished off the scoring in the 88th minute after some combination play from Raley and senior Widner Saint Cyr. Reid buried Saint Cyr’s cross with his head for his first career goal.

“It was good to see a pretty complete performance tonight,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “We haven’t won in the last couple of games and while we’ve played well and have been satisfied with the results, we wanted to get that winning feeling back.

“We wanted to get out from that first whistle and show Marshall that we respect them and we are going to put out a good effort and we did.”

The Terrapins are back in action against No. 15 Wake Forest on Saturday. Kickoff from Ludwig Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
