GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman middle hitter Ashlyn MacGregor has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Week after an outstanding weekend of play for the Maryland volleyball team. It is MacGregor’s first career conference honor.
“Ashlyn is getting better and better every week,” said head coach Tim Horsmon following Sunday’s match against Virginia Tech. “She has become someone that we feel comfortable setting and she’s done a great job. She works hard every day and she’s a lot of fun to coach.”
The freshman had a memorable weekend at the net, hitting at a .447 clip with 20 kills (2.22) and 11 blocks (1.22) over the course of two matches. MacGregor’s 12 kills against Virginia Tech were a career-high, surpassing teammate Alex Brown for the most kills by a Maryland freshman this season.
MacGregor opened the weekend with a then-personal best eight kills (.533 pct.) in the Terps’ victory against Virginia, while also tallying six blocks. The Tarpon Springs, Fla. native was even better in her encore performance against Virginia Tech, posting 12 kills in addition to five blocks.
With an overall record of 10-6 (2-2 ACC), Maryland can make a move in the conference standings this weekend as it travels to the Sunshine State for bouts with Florida State on Friday at 7:00 pm and Miami on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
