COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Thanks to supporters, Rebounders, alumni and fans, the Maryland women’s basketball team is enjoying a major redesign of its locker room and team meeting room space.
The project encompassed three rooms of the facility. It now features an expanded locker room space, new lockers, flat screen TVs, a brand-new trophy display area, custom furnishings, kitchenette space, as well as work space for student-athletes with Apple computers.
“It's like a new house or a new car- we can't wait to have visitors so everyone can see it. So far, it's blowing people away,” head coach Brenda Frese said. “A lot of special people helped us make this happen and we are so grateful to them all. Our staff spent a lot of time fundraising and going over designs and it really turned out even better than we imagined. The photos, the colors and the feel it creates is just tremendous. We always want our players to have the best and I think we've got it."
Interior Designer Karen Luria, AF IIDA, PROF AF AIA/DC, Karen Luria Interior Identity Inc., worked with coaches, student-athletes and staff members to incorporate their needs and make it a place all members of the Maryland women’s basketball family can come together. Luria first met with the student-athletes and coaches separately, then together to meld their ideas.
“The configuration of the room was totally changed and almost all of the furnishings were custom-designed,” Luria said. “The sectional had to be scaled to seat the entire team, and the fabric had to be durable, cleanable, impermeable and specific to Maryland colors. The very large coffee table was designed so its center would serve as a large tray for food, clean easily and accommodate the entire seating area. The media cabinet was made to fit specified equipment.”
“All café tables and countertops were made from recycled, old stain glass windows. The flooring had to be attractive and slip proof with a requisite of little maintenance. The long wall mirror was added to give added depth and dimension to the room and to reflect all of Maryland’s colors and graphics.”
