Sophomore Olga Bredikhina’s Flight B singles title was the highlight of a successful weekend for the Maryland women’s tennis team at the Cissie Leary Invite in Philadelphia.

Bredikhina defeated her sister Nataliya in the semifinals before taking the title over Princeton’s Caroline Joyce, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. Freshman Kristina Hovsepyan also impressed with a semifinal appearance in Flight A singles in her first collegiate tournament.

In a weekend that featured the debuts of four freshmen, the Terrapins started off strong on Friday. Freshman Alexandra Stanova won her first round match in Flight A, 6-1, 6-2, over Samantha Stadler of Bowdoin College. The rest of the Terps in Flight A, senior Welma Luus, freshman Cassandre Thebault and Hovsepyan, received first round byes.

Hovsepyan and Luus moved into the round of 16 later on Friday, while Thebault and Stanova lost their second round matches and dropped into the consolation bracket.

The Terps also found success in Flight B on day one. While freshman Olga Gaistruk and Olga Bredikhina received first round byes, Nataliya Bredikhina and freshman Olivia Gaudreault both claimed first round victories.  Gaudreault would subsequently drop her second round match, but Gaistruk and both Bredikhina sisters advanced, giving the Terps three players in the round of 16.

Hovsepyan became the only Terp to advance to the round of 16 in Flight A when she notched a 6-4, 2-6, (10-6) victory over Nicole Pvlonka of Drexel. The freshman defeated Columbia’s Crystal Leung to advance to the semifinals and finished her collegiate singles debut with a tough loss to Penn’s Sol Eskenazi, 6-4, 6-4.

Bredikhina’s run to the Flight B title would not prove difficult until she ran into her sister in the semifinals. The twins battled in two tough sets, with Olga prevailing, 6-4, 6-4. The Russian then took the title with a hard fought victory over Joyce in the final.

In doubles, the Terps found moderate success. Three teams (Hovsepyan/Thebault, Bredikhina/Bredikhina and Gaistruk/Gaudreault) advanced to the round of 16, while the pair of Luus and Stanova finished its run in the quarterfinals.

The Terps are back in action next weekend at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C.
