COLLEGE PARK, Md. –  Maryland athletics has teamed with the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) for the Capital One Fiscal U program, in which student-athletes will learn personal finance basics in areas including saving, budgeting, credit and debt management and investing.

Through the Fiscal U program, student-athletes are presented with a series of key financial decisions they can expect to face at some point in life. Student-athletes must choose which action to take. A virtual financial coach helps the participants learn from their decisions. Fiscal U is a web-based program that our student-athletes will be able to complete on their departmental-issued iPad.

They have the opportunities to earn badges through various stages of life, such as moving off campus, landing their first job, buying a car and other.

“This is such an important topic for Maryland to cover with our student-athletes,” director of athletics Kevin Anderson said. “We strive to help our student-athletes develop into responsible, outstanding adults, and this is one area some may not be familiar with. We would like to thank NACDA and Capital One for this forward-thinking program and for including our student-athletes in it.”

“Financial literacy becomes a critical skill during college, when students are away from home, making decisions with potential long-term impacts on their financial futures,” director of financial education for Capital One Shelley Solheim said. “As an NCAA corporate champion and long-time sponsor of Maryland Athletics, Capital One Bank is committed to supporting all areas of college sports and contributing resources to help student athletes reach their goals on the playing field and in the classroom.”

“I’d like to commend Maryland and Kevin Anderson for taking a leadership role in being the inaugural member institution to participate in our Capital One Fiscal U program,” NACDA executive director Bob Vecchione said. “Capital One has been committed to our program from the beginning, utilizing student-athletes and academic advisors, to help develop a user-friendly interactive program that will be widely embraced.”
