Terps Opens Home Slate with Maryland Invitational

The Maryland volleyball team (2-1) opens its 2013 home schedule this weekend with the Maryland Invitational. The Terps welcome LIU Brooklyn, Pennsylvania and UMKC to Comcast Pavilion for the two-day tournament.

Friday night, the Terps take on UMKC at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the squad faces LIU at 1:30 p.m. and concludes the invitational against Penn at 7:30 p.m.

The Terps opened their season last weekend at the GW Invitational winning two of three matches to take the tournament title. The squad defeated the host Colonials in three sets before coming from 2-0 down to knock off Ole Miss on Saturday, 3-2. Junior Ashleigh Crutcher was named the tournament MVP, while senior Sarah Harper and junior Adreené Elliott earned all-tournament team honors.

Parking Information

Due to the Maryland home football game on Saturday, fans attending the Maryland Invitational should park in the Terrapin Trail Garage (Lot 6). The cost to park in the garage is $15. After 4:30 p.m., parking is free at all surrounding lots including the Terrapin Trail Garage, but space will be limited.  Please allow extra time as traffic will be very heavy at times throughout the day.

Maryland enters the home-opening weekend after winning two of three matches at the GW Invitational. The Terps defeated the host Colonials in three sets Friday night to open the season. On Saturday, Maryland overcame a 2-0 deficit to knock off Ole Miss in five. In the nightcap, the Terps fell to UMBC in three.

Ashleigh Crutcher led the team offensively at the GW Invitational. The All-ACC performer from a season ago averaged 4.09 kills per set in the three matches to earn MVP honors. In the tournament finale against the Retrievers, Crutcher had 18 kills after tallying a double-double against the Rebels with 12 kills and 13 digs.

Mary Cushman also provided an offensive spark in the three matches. Cushman averaged 3.36 kills per set and opened the tournament with a 16-kill performance against George Washington.

Crutcher was joined on the all-tournament team by Adreené Elliott and Sarah Harper. Elliott had 2.55 kills per set and totaled nine blocks, while Harper averaged 5.18 digs per set.

Julia Anderson made her debut for the Terps at setter. The freshman dished out 5.64 assists per set and had a pair of 22-assist matches against GW and UMBC.

Scouting the Blackbirds

2013 LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds: 1-2, 0-0 NEC

LIU won one of three at the Campus USA Credit Union Invitational last weekend defeating New Orleans, 3-0, and falling to Duke and Florida.

Despite the record, two Blackbirds were honored by the NEC. Annika Foit was named co-player of the week and Jessica Rice earned co-defensive player of the week honors.

Foit, the 2012 NEC Player of the Year, posted 25 kills over the course of three matches to open the year for the defending NEC champions.

Rice anchored the net in LIU Brooklyn's opening weekend. The middle blocker finished three matches with 10 blocks.

Scouting the Quakers

2013 Pennsylvania Quakers: 0-0, 0-0 Ivy

The Maryland Invitational will serve as the Quakers opener.

Last season, Penn went 13-12 and 8-6 in the Ivy League. Emma White is back after leading the Quakers in kills (258). White will be joined on the Kristen Etterbeck, who finished with 246 kills a season ago.

Ronnie Bither, the Quakers leading setter, and libero Dani Shepard are also back.

2013 University of Missouri-Kansas City: 1-2, 0-0 WAC

The `Roos went 1-2 at the Arkansas Invitational with their lone win coming in three sets over Northwestern State. On Tuesday, UMKC dropped a a four-set match to Kansas.

Sophomore Sydney Crimmins was named to the Arkansas Invitational All-Tournament Team after leading the 'Roos with 32 kills, a .333 hitting percentage, 21 digs and nine blocks.

Last season, the 'Roos finished 17-13 overall, the second most wins in school history, and 9-7 in Summit League play, tying for third in the regular season standings.

Honored Terps

Maryland took the GW Invitational title last weekend led by tournament MVP Ashleigh Crutcher. The junior opened the tournament with 15 kills and a .303 hitting percentage against the host Colonials.

Crutcher followed up that performance with a double-double against Ole Miss (12 kills, 13 digs), and closed with 18 kills against UMBC.

Sarah Harper was strong all weekend along the backline finishing with 5.18 digs per set including 22 in the five-set win over the Rebels on Saturday.

Adreené Elliott completed the trio of all-tournament Terps. Elliott had 28 kills combined in the three matches nine blocks.

Fresh Faces

Julia Anderson and Ashlyn MacGregor made their Terrapin debuts at the GW Invitational.

MacGregor was a force along the net finishing with 10 blocks, while Julia Anderson ran the offense and averaged 5.64 assists per set.

Record Watch

Mary Cushman is 25 kills shy of 1,000 kills. The senior is 47 kills away from tying Maria DiLivio for 10th most all-time.

With a .307 career hitting percentage, Adreené Elliott ranks fifth all-time at Maryland. Rachel Wagener holds the school record with a .341 average.

Libero Sarah Harper has 89 career service aces, three shy Conya Jabari-Kitwala for 10th all-time.

With 57 digs over the weekend, Harper moved past Bethany Springer (1,204) for seventh all-time with 1,252 career digs. She is 37 digs away from passing Sarah Treadwell (1,288) for sixth.

Head Coach Tim Horsmon

Tim Horsmon is in his sixth season in charge of the Maryland volleyball team. Horsmon has 291 career victories 293 victories in his 15 seasons as a head coach.
