#15 Terps Head West For First Road Trip Of 2013

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 15 Maryland Terrapin women’s soccer team hits the road for the first time in 2013 when it travels west for matches at No. 22 Santa Clara and at No. 4 Stanford. Maryland will play at Santa Clara on Friday, Sept. 6 at 10 p.m. Eastern and will finish up at Stanford on Sunday, Sept. 8 with a 3 p.m. Eastern start.

Did you know ... the last time Maryland traveled to the Pacific timezone for a regular season match was 2003. The Terps played at Washington and vs. Washington State in an ACC/Pac-10 Challenege event.

• Maryland has played just one exhibition prior to the season opener, defeating Loyola 3-1. The Terps dominated their in-state foes, outshooting the Greyhounds 28-6. Maryland scored the lone goal of the first half in the 31st minute when sophomore Ashley Spivey finished a pass from sophomore Riley Barger. After Loyola tied the score early in the second half, sophomore Maisie McCune got on the end of a corner kick from sophomore Shannon Collins to score the game-winner off a perfect header into the upper left 90 in the 72nd minute. Junior Alex Doody finished a cross from freshman Natasha Ntone-Kouo in the 77th minute to add an insurance goal.

• The Terps opened the season with a 9-0 shutout of The Citadel (recap | stats) on Aug 23. Sophomore Ashley Spivey set career highs with her first career hat trick and seven total points. Freshman Lauren Berman made her collegiate deubt a memorable one with a goal and two assists. Senior Hayley Brock had a goal and an assist, while sophmore Shannon Collins had two assists in the victory, which was Maryland's highest-scoring win since Aug. 22, 2011 when the Terps topped Loyola, 9-0.

• Maryland fell behind 2-0 early in the first half against Villanova on Aug. 26, but a late hat trick from senior Hayley Brock lifted the Terps to a 4-2 win over the Wildcats (recap | stats). Junior Cory Ryan scored before halftime to cut Nova's lead to one goal heading into the second half. The Wildcats went down a player when Kathryn Rayner was sent off with a red card in the 52nd minute. But Maryland couldn't capitalize until Brock scored three times from the 83rd to the 87th minutes to give the Terps the win.

• The Terrapins jumped out early and never looked back in their 3-0 shutout of George Mason (recap | stats) on Aug. 30. Sophomore Riley Barger scored her first career goal in just the second minute of the match to spot the Terps a 1-0 lead. Senior Hayley Brock continued her torrid scoring pace by netting the second goal of the game in the seventh minute. Freshman Lauren Berman added her second goal of the season in the 80th minute to close the scoring. Berman and Brock also added assists in the match and sophomore Shannon Collins picked up a pair of assists vs. the Patriots.

• The Terps earned their third shutout victory of the season with a 2-0 win over Navy (recap | stats) on Sept. 1. The match was scoreless until the 71st minute when sophomore Gabby Galanti scored her first goal of the season off of assists from junior Cory Ryan and sophomore Riley Barger. Senior Hayley Brock netted the insurance goal in the 82nd minute off of a feed from senior Megan Gibbons. Sophomore goalkeeper Rachelle Beanlands made a season-high four saves.

• Santa Clara is 2-2 on the season after winning a of matches last weekend. The Broncos are ranked No. 22 in the latest Soccer America and TopDrawerSoccer.com Top 25 polls and are receiving votes in the NSCAA poll.

2013 Statistics

• Maryland will be the third ACC team the Broncos will play in 2013 after opening the season with North Carolina and Virginia at the Virginia Soccer Tournament. Santa Clara lost 2-0 to the Tar Heels on Aug. 23 in Charlottesville, Va., and then dropped a 4-0 result to the host Cavaliers on Aug. 25. Santa Clara returned home to face Long Beach State on Aug. 29 and picked up its first win of the season, 4-0. The Broncos went into overtime when they played at Fresno State on Aug. 31, but emerged with a 1-0 victory to even their record at 2-2.


Series History vs. Santa Clara

• This will be just the third meeting all-time between these two programs. Santa Clara is 2-0-0 vs. the Terps with a 1-0 win in 1997 at the George Mason Tournament and a 4-2 win at the Stanford Invitational in 2000.

• The Cardinal opened its season with a East Coast swing that saw them earn one-goal wins at Boston College and UConn. Stanford defeated the Eagles 2-1 in overtime when Alex Doll scored the game-winner in the 108th minute. Stanford then earned a 1-0 win at Connecticut with Taylor Uhl scoring the game's lone goal in the 35th minute. The Cardinal then played to a 1-1 tie with No. 16 Portland in their home opener on Aug. 31. Portland scored early to take a 1-0 lead, but Stanford got the equalizer in the 66th minute on an unassisted goal by Haley Rosen.


Series History vs. Stanford

• This will be just the third-ever meeting between the Terps and the Cardinal. Stanford won the first meeting, 3-0, at the Stanford Invitational in 2000. The two teams played to a scoreless tie in 2011, which turned out to be the lone blemish on Stanford's NCAA championship season that saw the Cardinal finish with a 25-0-1 record.


Head Coach Jonathan Morgan

Jonathan Morgan is in his second season at the helm of the Maryland women’s soccer program after spending the previous five seasons on the Terrapin sideline as an assistant coach. He is 18-7-2 (.704) as the Terps’ head coach.

Scoring Streaks

Hayley Brock has scored at least one goal in each of Maryland's last six games dating back to the Terps' 2012 NCAA tournament first round match vs. Stony Brook.

• Since 1994 there have been just 20 scoring streaks of at least three games for the Terps and Brock owns three of those. Her current streak of six matches is second only to Emmy Harbo's streak of seven games with a goal in 1996.

Hat Trick History

• Sophomore Ashley Spivey opened the 2013 season with a hat trick in the Terps' 9-0 win over The Citadel. Senior Hayley Brock followed that performance with a natural hat trick in Maryland's 4-2 come-from-behind win over Villanova on Aug. 26. Those two performances mark the first time in the Maryland women's soccer program's 27-year history that back-to-back hat tricks have been posted.

Terps In Overtime

• Maryland has played in 97 overtime games in its 26-year history. The Terps’ all-time record in those overtime games is 29-25-43 (.521).

• The Terrapins have played in eight overtime games in the ACC tournament and have a 3-1-4 mark in those games. Maryland won the shootout in three of the four games it tied in the ACC tournament.


Terps Toppling Top 10 Teams

• Maryland has defeated a Top 10 ranked team 21 times in its history. The Terps' most memorable Top 10 victory, 2-1 at No. 2 North Carolina on Oct. 24, 2010, tied for he highest ranked opponent ever defeated by Maryland. The Terrapins defeated No. 2 Boston College on Oct. 7 in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Those two victories mark the first time in program history that Maryland has defeated two Top 10 teams in a single month. The Terps then added to that with another 2-1 win over No. 8 Florida State on Oct. 28. The latest Top 10 win for the Terps came on Nov. 2, 2012 in the ACC semifianls at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., when Maryland defeated No. 6 Wake Forest, 2-0. That marked the Terps' first shutout of a top 10 team since their 1-0 win at No. 10 Tennessee in the 2006 season opener. Earlier in the 2012 season, the Terps topped No. 6 North Carolina on Sept. 13, 2012 to become the first team in history to defeat the Tar Heels three straight times in three consecutive seasons. Non-Conference Success

• Dating back to its 10-0 win over Mount St. Mary's in 2008, Maryland has lost only four times in its last 44 matches vs. non-ACC opponents. The Terps have outscored its non-conference opposition 130-23 in those 44 matches.

• The Terps recorded 20 straight wins over non-ACC foes before tying Georgetown, 1-1, in second round of the NCAA tournament in 2010. Maryland is now 36-4-4 in its last 44 non-conference games. The Terps had been unbeaten in 31-straight non-conference games prior to losing, 1-0, at Oklahoma State in the Sweet 16 of the 2011 NCAA tournament. So far this season Maryland topped The Citadel, 9-0, in the season opener, beat Villanova, 4-2 and shutout George Mason, 3-0, and Navy, 2-0.

• The Terps won their 100th match at Ludwig Field with a 6-0 victory over Iona on Aug. 20, 2010. Since its opening in 1995, Ludwig Field has proved to be a tremendous home-field advantage for the Terps women’s soccer team. All-time Maryland is 126-50-21 (.696) at Ludwig Field.

• Through the seasons, the Terps have had a knack for shutting teams out at Ludwig Field. Maryland has won 79 of its 126 victories (62.7%) at Ludwig Field via shutout. Add in the 12 0-0 ties the Terps have had at Ludwig Field and it totals 91 times that Maryland has shutout its opponent in 196 games (46.4%).
