• Included in that mix of returning starters is 2012 MAC Hermann Trophy winner Patrick Mullins. The New Orleans, product was the ACC Offensive Most Valuable Player, registering team-highs in goals (17), assists (10) and points (44). Sophomore Schillo Tshuma will be looked upon to generate scoring as well after tallying 10 goals in 2012.

• Gone from last year’s starting midfield is All-American John Stertzer, who was drafted 12th overall by Real Salt Lake in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. However, the cupboard is far from empty with returning starters Dan Metzger and Sunny Jane and spot starters Tsubasa Endoh, Jereme Raley and Mikias Eticha back this season.

• Sophomores Mikey Ambrose and Dakota Edwards registered 22 and 23 starts, respectively, a year ago and look to lead the backline in 2013.

• There is a four-way battle in goal for the starting position as Keith Cardona, Jordan Tatum, Cody Niedermeier and rookie Zack Steffen will fight for time at keeper. Steffen is the early favorite to win the starting spot.

Scouting The Golden Bears

• Cal is coming off of an 8-7-3 record in 2012, which included a 6-0 loss at Maryland in the third game of the season. Steve Birnbaum missed that match. A 2011 All-Pac-12 first-team defender, Birnbaum played just once last year due to injury, but he is healthy and back for the Bears as a fifth-year senior.
