John Helmer still keeps close ties to the Maryland program.

A former long snapper with the Terps, who lettered and graduated in 1999, Helmer spent Fan Appreciation Day on Saturday with his daughter Hannah (6) and his son Sean (4).

"Fan Appreciation Day is a great time for the kids," Helmer said.

"They have great activities for the kids - like the bounce house and the football toss.  It's good exposure and an opportunity to see the football team prior to the start of the season."

Helmer, who resides in Frederick, Md., attends the games with his wife, Halee, and has been a season-ticket holder since 2000.

He is very optimistic about the upcoming season.

"I think if we stay healthy I feel we will be very competitive," Helmer said.  "We have the best receiving corps in the conference and we have two experienced leaders in the secondary in Dexter McDougle and Jeremiah Johnson."

Helmer was standing on the concourse, a few feet where fans were purchasing game-worn Maryland Pride jerseys.

"I like the jerseys and believe it can also help recruiting," Helmer said. "I think it plays a big role with the kids who like the cool look."

When asked who her favorite Maryland player was Hannah replied, "My dad," as she headed to Section 25 to watch the start of the Terps' scrimmage.

Helmer smiled and said, "That's nice but I know my son's favorite players are Stefon Diggs and C.J Brown. He has both their jerseys and I know he will be wearing them every Saturday this fall."
