Maryland Athletics hosted campers from Mathletics, a summer math camp for rising 6th and 7th grade mathematically talented and motivated minority males, earlier this week at Comcast Center.

John Auslander, a senior forward on the men’s basketball team, spoke to the talented students about the important role the subject of math plays within the game of basketball. Auslander shared how math plays a vital role in compiling each player’s statistics and how the scouting department relies heavily on percentages. He used an example of how each coach can request an opponent’s free-throw percentage and the importance of the staff having the correct calculation to make a timely evaluation during a game.  Auslander also shared the importance of also managing the time on the shot clock and being able to accurately calculate the most opportune time to take a shot during each offensive possession.

The students enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of the Comcast Center conducted by Auslander and Carrie Blankenship, Maryland’s Assistant AD/Championships & Community Engagement.  They took photos of the men's basketball team's new state-of-the-art film room and locker room and enjoyed meeting and getting autographs from Head Coach Mark Turgeon and select student-athletes.

Jamal Jeter, who directs the Mathletics program and arranged the visit with Maryland athletics, echoed the student’s excitement.

“I would like to greatly thank the staff and student athletes at the University of Maryland for being so welcoming and informative,” Jeter said.  “The Mathletics students have spent a great deal of time in the classroom looking at mathematical relationships using sports as models. Mathletes have also spent time playing sports for enjoyment and to collect and analyze data. Our students were amazed to see the training facilities, research, time, and dedication student athletes must expend in order to be successful. The students have now been inspired to live up to the character and accomplishments that they were able to witness from some of our University athletes.”

Mathletics aims to augment students' mathematical comprehension and develop their critical thinking through group problem solving activities and engagement in physical activities based on mathematical concepts. Additionally, teachers and undergraduates will introduce students to math-related careers. More information on the program is included in this link below:
