COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland Director of Athletics Kevin Anderson was a guest speaker for a group of seventh graders in the AVID (Advance Via Individual Determination) program at Nicholas Orem Middle School on April 30.
Anderson spoke to the youth about his life experience growing up, including his decision to go to college and his career path that eventually led him to college athletics. He encouraged the students to never give up and reminded them that they can do anything they want to do in life with belief in themselves, hard work and dedication.
AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing students for college readiness and success in a global society.
Anderson asked the students to stand up, introduce themselves, talk about being a good student and then share what career they wanted to do after college. A few careers mentioned included video game designer, doctor, lawyer, entrepreneur, professional athlete and hair stylist.
Tyrell Anderson (no relation to Kevin), a student in the AVID program, invited Anderson to be a guest speaker.
