PHILADELPHIA - The Maryland outdoor track & field team excelled at the nation's most historic race - the Penn Relays - over the weekend at Franklin Field.
On Saturday, the women's 4x800m relay team capped off the day with a new school record. The group of Maryam Fikri, Myah Hicks, Emily VandeWater, and Julie Sinkovitz had a strong run to finish in the top of the championship division. Their time of 8:44.24 is now tops in program history.
Pat Cole also competed in the men's hammer throw on Saturday, throwing 50.90 (166'11").
On Friday, Thea LaFond placed third in the Championship section of the triple jump. LaFond jumped a new personal best mark of 13.10m (42' 11 3/4"). The sophomore also placed eighth in the high jump with a mark of 5'9 1/4".
Amber Melville tied for third in the Championship section of the high jump. Melville cleared 5' 10 3/4" and had several strong attempts over six feet. The women's 4x200m relay of Ashley Brannock, Arielle Statham, Lauren Ball, and Jordan Simmons finished fourth in their heat with a time of 1:39.96.
On the men's side, Josh Haghighi placed seventh in the men's shot put with a mark of 16.00m (52' 6") and the men's distance medley relay also competed with the team of Kikanae Punyua, Shawn David, Mamadou Niang, and Brian Faherty.
