COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Following a successful 7-1 weekend in Virginia Beach to kick off its spring training season, the Maryland volleyball team is set to play host to back-to-back weekend tournaments beginning Saturday, April 13 at Comcast Pavilion.
Competition will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday with the Terps taking on Rutgers. Villanova and the Scarlet Knights play at noon, with the Terps closing the day against the Wildcats at 3 p.m.
Maryland went 7-1 last weekend including two wins over ACC-rival NC State (25-11, 25-20) and split with the Tar Heels of North Carolina (25-22, 14-25). The Terps also picked up a pair of victories over George Mason (25-19, 25-20) and William & Mary (25-19, 25-20).
“Overall, I think we played well and had a solid weekend,” said head coach Tim Horsmon. “Offensively, we did a lot of good things and our outsides scored throughout the day. We really competed against a good NC State team in both sets and continued that in the first set against North Carolina.
“We've worked hard this spring and have the last week and half to finish strong and do as much as we can to get ready for the summer and preseason.”
Outside hitters Ashleigh Crutcher and Mary Cushman led the Terps offensively. The duo combined for 50 kills in the eight sets with Crutcher leading the team with 26 kills. Cushman finished with 24. Emily Fraik finished with the day with 18 kills on .340 hitting.
Overall, the Terps hit .286 for the weekend and turned in a strong defensive effort to hold its opponents to .156 hitting.
“We need to continue to improve in receiving the ball and our total team defense,” said Horsmon. “We played hard, but the execution of our blocking and floor defense has to improve for us to take the next step. We also have to involve our middles much more than we did on transition.”
