Myers Places Seventh at ASICS Nationals

AKRON, Ohio - Maryland heavyweight Spencer Myers earned All-American honors on Sunday with a seventh-place finish at 120 kg in the Freestyle Division at the 2013 ASICS University & FILA Cadet National Championships at the Louis and Freda Stile Athletic Field House on the campus of the University of Akron.

After dropping his opening match to Oklahoma State's Austin Marsden, Myers won six of his next seven matches including a 7-0 decision over Cole Tobin of Wisconsin in the seventh-place match.

Myers' march through the wrestleback began with a 14-4 technical fall over Jon Scanlan of Iowa State. After a 10-0 technical fall over Mike Gregory, Myers pinned Henry Chirino 51 seconds into the match.

The redshirt junior then edged Zach Merrill, 3-2, and Michael Kroells of Minnesota, 2-1. In the wrestleback quarterfinals, Myers lost 9-3 to 2013 NCAA qualifier Adam Fager of Utah Valley setting up the seventh-place match against Tobin.

Three other Terrapin wrestlers also competed in the event: Shane Arechiga (63 kg), Tony Gardner (84 kg) and T.J. Guidice (70 kg).
