CARY, N.C. - Under overcast skies, the Maryland men's and women's outdoor track and field teams completed day two of competition at the 2013 ACC Championships Friday.

Maryland had a trio of athletes finish in the top-10 in the shot put event. On the women's side, Moriah Young and Chioma Onyekwere both scored well. Young - a senior - took fifth (51-03.75) and Onyekwere - a freshman - finished eighth (48-05.25). Young's mark is the second longest in Maryland's women's outdoor track and field history, and topped her previous best of 50-03.50. Representing the men, junior Josh Haghighi placed seventh (53-01.75).

In the heptathlon, the Terps had a pair of freshmen with top finishes. Lauren Ball finished ninth (4514 points) and Lauren Dally finished 14th (3846 points). Ball's mark is 10th best in Maryland outdoor history.

Sophomore Thea LaFond took eighth in the long jump with a distance of 19-08.75, which is tied for ninth best all-time in Terps history.

Several runners ran in the preliminaries today and qualified for the finals. Senior Arielle Statham qualified for the women's 400m finals with the eighth fastest qualifying time in the field (55.29). Her time ranks ninth all-time at Maryland.

Junior Julie Sinkovitz qualified in the 800m with a personal best time (2:08.98). Her mark is the fifth fastest in Maryland annals. Both women will run in the finals on Saturday afternoon.

The Championships will finish up Saturday, beginning with the men's pole vault at 11:30 a.m. and concluding with the awards ceremony at 8 p.m.
